Facebook promises to fix email and address book blunder

The social network says that lost emails and changed address books were caused by a bug.

Facebook angered its members last week members noticed their primary email address had been changed to a @facebook.com email address.

The change caused many to lose unknown amounts of emails as well as altering address books. Facebook members who use mobile and personal devices that synchronise address books with Facebook contacts also had trouble.

However, Andrew Bosworth, Facebook's Director of Engineering, told the Verge that a software bug was the reason user's contacts' email addresses were reset.

Bosworth did say, however, that it was Facebook's intention to give the new @facebook.com email addresses exclusive visibility on member profiles.

On some devices the software bug was synching the last email address added to the account instead of the primary one the user had chosen.

"We are in the process of fixing this issue and it will be resolved soon," a Facebook spokesperson told CNET in an e-mail. "After that, those specific devices should pull the correct addresses."

"We've noticed that in a very limited number of cases, the bounce e-mail back to the original sender may not be delivered because it may get intercepted by spam filters," the spokesperson said. "We are working to make sure that e-mail senders consistently receive bounce messages."

To change your email address back to your previous one click on the about section in your timeline, under contact info select edit, click on your preferred email and click save when finished.
