Another hiccup? Romney's foreign trip not smooth

GDANSK, Poland (AP) ? It wasn't supposed to be this way.

Mitt Romney outraged Palestinians on Monday, stirring fresh controversy on his visit to Israel just days after insulting the British on what was intended as a feel-good visit to the Olympics in London.

Whether or not the trip changes votes back home, the effect hasn't seemed to be what Romney's presidential campaign had in mind.

His first steps onto the world stage as President Barack Obama's Republican challenger were carefully crafted to avoid political risk. He visited countries that are staunch U.S. allies, limited questions from the media and arranged made-for-TV appearances at symbolic venues in London and Jerusalem. It was all intended to demonstrate he was ready to handle foreign affairs smoothly and lead during dangerous times.

Instead, as he made his final stop of a three-nation tour in Poland late Monday, Republicans and Democrats alike were shaking their heads in the U.S. Though Republicans said they saw no lasting harm, Democrats raised questions about Romney's ability to handle delicate topics with sensitivity on foreign soil, even under the friendliest conditions.

Romney's latest trouble stemmed from a speech he gave to Jewish donors in which he suggested that their culture was part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians. Kind words for Israel are standard for many American politicians, but Palestinian leaders suggested his specific comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East.

Romney's campaign later said his remarks were mischaracterized.

"Because it's billed as a layup ? it's billed as something that should be simple ? perhaps he let his guard down," said Hogan Gidley, a senior aide under former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum. "You say, 'Gosh, this guy is so scripted, the campaign is so disciplined, so smart, how could this happen?'" Still, he doubted that Romney would suffer any long-term effects among voters who are still undecided three months before the election.

Predictably, Obama's campaign was more critical, with senior strategist David Axelrod saying on Twitter: "Is there anything about Romney's Rolling Ruckus that would inspire confidence in his ability to lead US foreign policy?"

It's unclear whether voters in the U.S. are paying attention to Romney's stumbles, especially as concerns about the nation's economy dominate most Americans' concerns.

"I'd say it has the same impact as a stubbed toe," said Iowa Republican John Stineman, a marketing consultant in Des Moines. "People are still focused on the economy."

And Debra Hayes, a Republican-leaning independent from Denver, said Romney's overseas comments have no impact on how she'll vote.

"I'm interested only in the economy - jobs, and the prices of things," said Hayes, who is undecided. "We need to stand with Israel. And our president needs to show leadership overseas. But things are going downhill at home, and that's what matters."

And Romney drew his share of favorable media coverage back home. A speech on Israel policy, delivered at dusk against the scenic backdrop of Jerusalem's Old City, drew praise for its setting and delivery. He and his wife, Ann, appeared relaxed and engaged in an interview on CNN, where Ann Romney described her husband as loving and emotionally engaged.

Still, missteps in the past week have fueled opponents' contentions that the former businessman and Massachusetts governor is out of touch with the nation and the world he hopes to lead.

As the trip got under way, Romney caused a stir in Britain by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared to host the Olympic Games. The dispute overshadowed his efforts to highlight his personal experience leading the Salt Lake City Games a decade ago. Instead, Romney was widely assailed by the London media and criticized by British leaders.

Then on his first day in Israel, Romney distanced himself from an adviser's suggestion that he would "respect" a decision by Israel to launch military action to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

On Monday at a fundraiser, opened to the media after the campaign first said it would be closed, Romney shared a sentiment he sometimes talks about on the campaign trail in the United States and repeats in his book, "No Apology." But his decision to highlight cultural differences in a region where such differences have helped fuel violence for generations prompted new questions about his diplomatic skills ? and enraged Palestinian leaders.

Comparing economic output per capita in Israel and "just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority," he declared that "you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality." He was speaking to about 40 wealthy donors at the King David Hotel, which is within sight of the Palestinian territory on the West Bank.

He said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence." He said similar disparity exists between other neighboring countries, including Mexico and the United States.

Palestinian leaders quickly objected.

"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "It is a racist statement, and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation."

"This will cause a lot of damage to American interests," he said.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the comments "were grossly mischaracterized."

The campaign added that Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities ? the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador ? shows his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and the Palestinians.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said, "One of the challenges of being an actor on the international stage, particularly when you're traveling to such a sensitive part of the world, is that your comments are very closely scrutinized for meaning, for nuance, for motivation."

Earnest sidestepped questions about whether Obama agreed with Romney's comments about culture, saying only that Obama believed economic issues are among the matters that would need to be addressed by the Israelis and Palestinians during any peace talks.

Romney flew on to Poland for two days of visits with leaders.

He met with the Cold War-era Solidarity leader Lech Walesa in Gdansk, earning his endorsement: "I wish you to be successful because the success is needed to the United States, of course, but to Europe as well and to the rest of the world, too. So, Governor Romney, get your success, be successful," Walesa said through a translator.

Walesa suggested Romney's leadership was needed to restore America's position in the world.

Romney is to meet with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on Tuesday before delivering his final foreign policy speech of the trip.

The Romney campaign hopes Walesa's backing will influence Catholics and labor union members in the U.S. But Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, told reporters Monday that the Polish visit "is nothing more than a superficial diversion and a desperate attempt to pander to Polish Americans and Catholics across our country."

Romney's visit to Poland was not without controversy.

Campaign officials said the visit with Walesa came at his invitation, but the current leadership of Solidarity distanced itself from the event and issued a statement critical of Romney. Solidarity characterized Romney as being hostile to unions and against labor rights. It emphasized that it had no role in organizing Romney's visit and expressed support for American labor organizations.

Joe Taslim Joins Fast Six

Director Justin Lin and his Fast And Furious casting team are continuing to sweep the world for interesting performers and have been cherry picking people from all sorts of movies. The latest addition is Indonesia?s Joe Taslim, who might be more than a little familiar to those of you who thrilled to the kick-ass antics of The Raid earlier in the year.

Taslim will play a villain named Jah in Fast Six (or whatever it ends up being called), a cold-blooded killer who employs both martial arts manoeuvres and some serious parkour abilities to battle Vin Diesel and co. Sounds like a good choice to us!

As well as Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez and Dwayne Johnson are all returning for this outing, which also adds franchise newcomers Gina Carano and Luke Evans.

Universal is keeping the plot a secret for now, but apparently Diesel?s usual gang of thieving / driving types will go up against Evans? squad when they both target the same job.

Lin is cranking the cameras now and the movie will screech into cinemas on May 24 next year. If it's even half as demented as Fast Five, we will be there with bells on.

Nelinia (Deallo) Vs Al'mayaz (TheNoremac42)

Today was the second day of the Spring equinox.

The sun was directly overhead the monk's brow, hot enough to make any traveler weary if she hadn't taken refuge in the shade of the forest, walking in a quite pleasant temperature. The truth, however, was that the monk was paranoid and righteously so. It was the first time that Nel had left the monastery on her own accord, even after two days since her abandonment, she couldn't help but twist her head around every five seconds and jumping after every little sound the forest had to offer.

If only the others would have joined her; she wouldn't be in this mess. Yet the other monks hadn't. The rumors of the king's untimely illness had spread like wildfire from the capital, reaching far and wide, to the steps of Nel's own home. At first, it was to be dealt with as rumors are, to be taken with a grain of salt. However, as more time passed, loose lips bear more tales. One in particular was about the prince's request for adventurers; aid of an artifact that could help his ailing father. The argument began when the woman inquired about it with fellow monks, friends she had grew up with since she was just a child, friends which she had trained rigorously with in body, mind, and spirit, thought it to be an unnecessary endeavor. Everyone is destined to die and all attempts to deny that simple truth will lead to failure.

Nel left on that night, sneaking out the front door, to do what is right. She wasn't the only monk who knew the importance of a leader but the only one who hadn't feared (at that moment in time) the outside world. A world riddled with vice. Murder, thievery, and deception.

Even while the sun was out, she was conscious of her surroundings, jittery to onlookers if there were any. As I mentioned before; it was necessary. She was clad in bright yellow monk robes which stopped at her knees and held a quarterstaff in her right hand. It would take no master tracker to spot her in the landscape, a forest with sand for soil, small little sprouts littered across the sand among the toughest of trees that survived and grew to great heights. It would take no master swordsmen to end her, the wooden staff no match for a a cold, steel weapon. As it would seem anyway. She had nothing else besides three copper coins and a small metal begging bowl that was dug in her chest.

To merely assume things, however, is an excellent way to die.

The bandages wrapped around her calfs, the midsection of her feet, forearms and knuckles were of no injury. The edges of her robes were purposefully tucked in these bandages; ready for combat. A precaution. Her steps, light and graceful, petite body, a very misleading and dangerous weapon.

Her paranoia suddenly put her on edge, having thought to hear another sound, she turned around, pulled down her hood to clear her peripheral vision, revealing her black shoulder-length hair tied back with twine, and took a fighting stance. The left leg was back, bent low, Nel's body leaned back entirely on the left leg while her right leg was straight and practically weightless. By her chest, the staff was gripped with her right hand by the center and the lower half with her left, leaving the front half pointed upwards, spanning four and half feet of reach.

Nel's emerald eyes peered into the forest, hoping she was indeed wrong like the day before, and she called out:

"Come out! I know you're there!"

Immediately greeted by her own echo, she waited, bound to let eventually turn away if there wasn't a true presence afoot...

Selecting the right PBX Service Provider for your Company Phone

Before you can choose the best one, you need to come up with a set of standards. For all those who have a small to medium-sized organization, there are numerous PBX phone providers that offer the services you?ll need. These standards shall guide you in weeding out insignificant choices.

Wonderful Features
These days, internet lines have reinvented telephony to make business communications a lot more efficient. Just before, standard telephone lines restrained voice clarity and provided no special functions. You can anticipate more functions from a company phone system like toll-free numbers, call holding, music-on-hold, call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, voicemail and much more that are hosted in cloud based PBX system.

With conventional phone systems, you need to pay more for long-distance calls; a lot more expensive are long-distance calls abroad. Long distance calls are also integrated for free. But with cloud-based telephone solutions, you won?t spend anything extra for domestic and international long distance calls.

Versatility to your Enterprise
It is also worth noting that you don?t need to add more phone lines so long as you have a reliable internet connection. With conventional phone systems, you have to pay more for long-distance calls; a lot more costly are long-distance calls abroad.

Call forwarding is a widely-used service that providers provide at no extra charge. Location will in no way be a barrier in undertaking business. In case you need to be outdoors and not just stuck at your desk phone, you can forward calls to your cellular phone and continue with business as usual.

Dependability of the Phone Service Provider
Some telephone service providers might allow a 30-day trial period for you to assess if the company phone system completely complies with your business needs. Making use of the system before you purchase also guarantees that all the features a provider markets truly do come with the package. Testing the business telephone system just before signing a contract is an excellent way to make sure that it?s acceptable and helpful to all workers.

Just Add Extensions to More Users
As your business grows, you may probably need more personnel, which implies you are going to require additional extensions for all those new staff. And most of all, you may want to add extensions yourself by utilizing an easy-to-use user interface. If permitted by your provider, you may buy one service package and expand it for a considerable time period without paying more.

Easy to Set up
A couple of of them provide telephone solutions that use the internet. This replaces the standard business telephone systems like Private Branch Exchange or PBX systems. If you are searching for a phone service for your company phone, be sure that the setup is fast and easy.

Take time to choose the top service provider for your company phone that works well to meet your needs. Sophisticated company phone systems might help your company function a lot more productively and compete with larger organizations.

Check out for much more details on how you will increase your advertising and marketing techniques by means of business email to fax. We also offer valuable info relating to business telephone system as well as business PBX that will help your company with its communication demands.

Islington Pest Control Company Advice 5 Ways to Make Your Home ...

Bed bug infestations are very common in the UK. Bed bugs don't only affect the quality of your sleep but can also cause severe itching that can lead to secondary infection--which is why making your home bug-free is of utmost importance most especially if you have young kids. Babies have very sensitive skin and a single bug bite can cause inflammation that can lead to more serious skin problems.

Here are six basic techniques that any N1 pest control expert would suggest to you to keep your home bug-free:

1.First, know how to spot these bugs. By appearance, a newly hatched bed bug would look semi-transparent and is of the size of a poppy seed. Meanwhile, adult bed bugs would look flat and about the size of an apple seed. From a light tan hue, these bugs would turn into rusty red when they're already full-grown.

Since they feed mainly on human blood, expect to see them in mattress seams and tufts, sheets, pillow cases and several upholstered furniture. Baseboards of walls as well as crevices in furniture are their favorite spots.

2.Sealing wall cracks and crevices using caulk is a great way to prevent such pests from coming into your home.

3.Another technique is to kill the these pests with a change in temperature. They weaken and eventually die if continuously exposed to extremely low or high temperatures. To expose them to high temperatures, use steam vapor when cleaning all fabrics and walls in your home. If you don't have access to steam cleaning, using hairdryers and irons on mattresses and any other possible bug hotspots is also widely used. Just make sure that you expose the bugs to sudden temperature changes so that they will not have the opportunity to scatter and hide in other places.

4.Vacuuming and washing all beddings, fabrics and clothes are also effective in removing these pests. 5.If bed bugs are still there even after you've done all the tips above, then it's time to shift to another method of extermination. You can stir up a simple mixture composed of tea tree oil and water in a spray bottle and then lightly mist the places where you suspect these pests to be present.

If you must revert to pesticides, choose the ones that are least toxic and have been created specifically for bed bugs. Professional exterminators should be able to give you sound pieces of advice on the best products to use. Also, use pesticides sparingly because no matter how "safe" they are marketed to be, they will still contain chemicals that could affect your or your family's health.

If you are living in Islington and you have serious bed bug problems you cannot solve on your own, you can seek help from Islington pest control experts. Learn more about how to eliminate bed bugs and other pests thriving in your home through various effective N1 pest controltechnologies by visiting our website.

Entry-level Sony 'Xperia J' photos leak out ahead of possible IFA arrival

Android Central

We're already expecting to see a couple of new Sony phones at next month's IFA show in Berlin, and now it seems they may be joined by a third, budget-oriented offering. The Sony ST26i, rumored to go to market as the "Xperia J,"  has cropped up on Taiwanese site ePrice, along with a set of purported specs.

According to posters on the site, the Xperia J will sport a 4-inch FWVGA (854x480) display, a 1GHz single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Around the back there's said to be a 5MP camera with single LED flash. From what we can see of the design, the phone seems to be a plain old candybar/slab design, like some other leaked Sony handsets we've seen lately. The photos would also see to confirm at least three colors -- pink, black and white.

We'd expect the "Xperia J" to appear alongside the LT30p "Mint" and LT29i "Hayabusa" at the Sony booth at IFA next month, but of course nothing's being officially confirmed ahead of the event. Keep watching in late August, as we'll be live on the ground in Berlin.

3 Tips For Crafting A Social Media Plan For Real Estate | Leading ...

Are you wondering why most social media marketing plans for Realtors? fail? The answer is simple: Commitment. Simply put, often, agents get impatient, don?t see results and quit. Sometimes they simply end up biting off more than they can chew and abandon the program as well. More often than not though, they have not spent the time to craft a marketing plan for their social media efforts. When you don?t have a structured plan, you have an impossible task ahead of you.

We get it. Social media is hard, requires CONSISTENCY and dedication. That said though, it?s not impossible. Here are three quick tips to consider, when drafting and implementing a social media marketing plan:

1) Stay committed:
This past weekend we made a viral video, poking fun at the public?s misconecptions of the Real Estate Industry, titled ?Being A Realtor? IS EASY! ? Anyone Can Be A Real Estate Agent?. Just as being a Realtor? is tough work, and requires dedication, perseverance and character to succeed, social media requires it?s own unique set of traits for success. Namely:

? Dedication

? Consistency

? Engagement

Without those three things, your campaign will fail. You need to look at your social media efforts as another way you spend time in your life building your Real Estate Practice. If you approach it as methodically, and as seriously as you do marketing and selling your client?s listings, you will succeed.

2) Let your content make you an expert:
FACT: People in the social universe DO NOT care if you are a ?Top 1% Realtor?, ?A Resident Expert Of An Area?, or even an ?Expert Negotiator That Can Get Them Top Dollar For Their Home?. That?s all a sales pitch. Leave the sales pitch at the door (mostly). In a perfect world, you want to share with people industry insights, your opinion on what top analysts are reporting in the media, local market conditions that affect your target audience. In other words, show them your vast, professional knowledge.

I generally suggest that agents focus their marketing plans on 85-90% education and then the remaining 10-15% on self promotion. At the end of the day, if a homeowner feels you are knowledgeable and professional, you really don?t have to ?sell them? on doing business with you. They are going to select you because of the professional you are.

3) Social Media Requires Social Engagement
You know that social media is actually ?social? media, right? If you do, pat yourself on the back. If you don?t, don?t feel bad. I can?t tell you how many people come into our office to have us take on their social media efforts and have no idea that they (or someone in my office) is actually going to have to monitor their social media properties and actually ?converse? with those that share posts, ask questions, etc.

The only way a busy Realtor? can execute this step successfully is to schedule your social media interaction. You don?t have to spend all day strapped to an internet enabled device, waiting, just in case someone responds to your social media posts. All you have to do is block off a ?social media meeting? in your calendar, every day, and be dedicated enough to keep that meeting, log into your social media control panel, and converse with those in your social media universe.

Once a day. Nothing more, nothing less. You?d be surprised how many people don?t do this. As a result, their social media efforts never reach critical mass.

These are just a few examples of ways you can arm yourself to guarantee Social Media success. There of course are many tips and tricks, and even strategies that can help you start with no presence and get up to ?social media baller? status, in no time at all. If you are interested in learning more about these, have some ideas you?d like to bounce off of someone, or even just have some basic questions that you?d like an unbiased opinion on, contact me anytime, and I?d be more than happy to speak with you and help you in any way I can.

Astrophile: Glitch boosts value of already rare star

Astrophile is our weekly column on curious cosmic objects, from the solar system to the far reaches of the multiverse

Object: Spinning star called a pulsar
Rotation rate: 7 times a second

A glitch is not normally something to boast about. But when one is found in an already rare type of pulsar ? curious dense, rotating stars that flash regularly like lighthouses ? it's like striking gold.

Such a find makes recently discovered pulsar J1838-0537 among the most precious of this kind of star. Its glitch ? an unexpected change in the tempo of its rotation that occurred in 2009 ? is the biggest ever discovered in this much rarer type of pulsar, which is detected via its highly energetic gamma-rays rather than by its lower-energy radio waves.

"Very few pulsars exhibit glitches," says Holger Pletsch of the Max Planck Institutes for Gravitational Physics and for Radio Astronomy, who led the team that discovered J1838-0537.

Studying glitch pulsars such as J1838-0537 could give us an insight into some of the strange physics thought to go on inside pulsars, from the bizarre, frictionless superfluids thought to lurk at their cores to the starquakes that may occur in their crusts. In turn, this could open up a new way to study extremely dense matter, which is impossible on Earth.

Clock stopped

Finding J1838-0537 in the first place wasn't easy. Using a data analysis method originally designed to detect gravitational waves, Pletsch's team dug through data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in the hope of uncovering previously missed pulsars.

Most of the 2000 or so known pulsars emit radio waves. Since the Fermi satellite launched, astronomers have discovered that 60 of them also emit gamma-rays. Another 30 appear to emit only gamma-rays. This is the type that Pletsch's team were looking for.

They found nine of them last year. And now they have a new one to add to the list. But before they could file it away they had to find out where it had disappeared to.

Pulsars tend to be reliable cosmic timekeepers thanks to their regular rotation. This is visible because their intense magnetic field accelerates particles at their surface to produce a beam of radiation along the magnetic field axis. As the pulsar spins, this beam sweeps into view once per rotation, rather like a lighthouse.

Starry weirdness

Pulsar J1838-0537 had been spinning like clockwork, seven times a second, when it seemed to disappear in 2009. Eventually, Pletsch and his team managed to find it again in their data ? and when they did, it was clear why it had disappeared.

The rare pulsar had in fact stepped up the speed of its rotation to about 38 millionths of a Hertz faster than before. As astronomers depend on pulsars' regularity to track them, this made it appear as if J1838-0537 had disappeared.

This might not sound like a big jump, but it is the biggest increase ever seen in this type of pulsar. It hid the pulsar from sight for about a year ? and means the pulsar could be even weirder than we know. "What the pulsar did in between is still unclear," says Pletsch: it could have started spinning even faster than we think it did, or it could even have been through several glitches.

The cause of the glitch is unclear. One explanation could be a starquake. These mysterious disturbances are thought to be triggered by stress in the pulsar's crust caused by the strong magnetic fields inside it.

Extreme heart

Alternatively, the glitch could be caused by a pulsar's frictionless superfluid interior spinning faster than its solid crust. The jury is still out, because so few glitches have ever been seen.

Studying these glitches could give us an insight into the poorly understood workings of pulsars, enabling us to "look at the real heart of these enormously powerful machines", says Pletsch.

That's interesting in terms of astrophysics ? but also to the fundamental behaviour of materials under extreme conditions. "These conditions are irreproducible on Earth," says Pletsch.

Learning a completely new language can be among the best things you can do to expand your career options. Nonetheless you have to learn what you should try to find in Chinese language software to make sure you will be using the appropriate system for your requirements. A few of the elements you must look for are whether the program will work on your own computer, the speaking dialect the program makes use of, and even the different kinds of speaking help the application provides for you to use.

Simply being equipped to work on your own computer is a vital first step. You need to know whether the software will function properly on your computer or not. There are lots of applications which are produced just for the PC, so if you have a Mac, you?ll either need to uncover a different program or you?ll have to use one of the software programs that enable Windows applications to work on a Mac.

With the Chinese language software you will want to be certain you are aware of the regional dialect it?s going to be using. Now you may believe this language is all of the same, but much like other areas in the world there are regional dialects. And that means you must know about the dialect the application will be using and then you will know for certain whether it is going to help you out. Keep in mind if this is not the proper regional dialect, you might end up learning something that is not going to be helpful at all where you intend to travel.

The speaking portions of the programs are essential for you to consider too. Now you may never have considered this issue before, but you will need to speak this language in order to learn it right. Therefore you have to understand how the software is going to teach you to speak the words correctly and whether or not it will teach you to read them. You may just be interested in learning to speak the language, and not how to write it. But when you?ll need to write Chinese, not all applications teach you the characters, so be sure to check into this ahead of time.

Even though lots of people won?t think about mastering a second language, others know this is actually the best way to broaden their career options. The problem is choosing the Chinese language software that can satisfy your personal requirements. Some of the items you should be searching for include whether or not it will be compatible with your own computer system, which of the regional dialects the programs use, and whether the software teaches you to both speak and write this language.

Exclusive: Spain discussed $366 billion bailout with Germany - source

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Spain has for the first time conceded it might need a full EU/IMF bailout worth 300 billion euros ($366 billion) if its borrowing costs remain unsustainably high, a euro zone official said.

Economy Minister Luis de Guindos brought up the issue with German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble in a meeting in Berlin last Tuesday as Spain's borrowing costs soared past 7.6 percent, the source said.

If needed, the money would come on top of the 100 billion euros already agreed to prop up Spain's banking sector, stretching the euro zone's resources to breaking point, and Schaeuble told de Guindos he was unwilling to consider a rescue before the currency bloc's ESM bailout fund comes on line later this year.

"De Guindos was talking about 300 billion euros for a full program, but Germany was not comfortable with the idea of a bailout now," the official told Reuters.

"Nothing will happen until the ESM is online. Once it is operational we will see what the borrowing costs for Spain are and maybe we will return to the question," the official said.

Spain has repeatedly said it would not need to follow Portugal, Ireland and Greece in seeking a full bailout. Asked about the source's comments, a government spokeswoman said on Friday: "We strongly deny any such plan. This possibility (of a 300-billion-euro rescue for Spain) has not been looked at and has not been discussed."

As Schaeuble and de Guindos were meeting on Tuesday, Spanish borrowing costs reached their highest level since the country adopted the euro, hitting 7.64 percent for 10-year bonds - a level at which Spain cannot sustainably borrow from the markets.

But on Thursday European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said the central bank was ready to act to bring down Spanish yields and the 10-year yield fell to 6.88 percent.

A second euro zone official said Spain could manage without a bailout, but had made bad communication mistakes which had unnerved investors. Asked if Madrid needed a bailout the second official said:

"In pure arithmetic terms no, if interest rates were commensurate with what I consider a sustainable situation."

BANKING LICENCE LEVERAGE

Draghi's move to talk down markets is the biggest signal yet that officials are now fully-focused on preventing investor pressure on Spain from forcing the euro zone into a full formal bailout.

The European Stability Mechanism, or ESM, is expected to come into operation in mid-September. It will have a total capacity of 500 billion euros, although it was initially planned that it would only build up this amount over a few years.

That means that coupled with the bank recapitalization loan, a full bailout runs the danger of exhausting the euro zone's rescue capacity, prompting fresh discussions of the idea of granting the ESM a banking license, the official said.

Called for by France but so far opposed by the ECB and Germany as well as Finland and the Netherlands, such a license would give the ESM virtually unlimited intervention capacity because it could fund itself at the ECB's liquidity operations.

Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny offered markets some hope of a softening of the ECB's position earlier this week, saying it had its merits.

Spokesmen for both the Bundesbank and Schaeuble firmly restated their opposition on Friday but the question remains of how the ESM would fund a Spanish bailout in practice, should it prove necessary.

"I believe it is no accident that Nowotny mentioned that - he was sending up a test balloon. And the silence afterwards (from opponents of the idea) was telling," the first euro zone official told Reuters.

"I feel that the Germans are changing their position on this, they are scared, and with good reason, and their opposition is softening," the official said.

The temporary bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), has 259.5 billion euros of lending capacity left, of which up to 100 billion is already earmarked for the recapitalization of Spain's stricken banks.

Under current agreements the ESM was to start with only 100 billion euros of lending capacity in July, and its firepower was to rise to 200 billion euros in October as the second tranche of its capital was to be paid in by euro zone governments.

It is unclear what the timetable of payments for capital tranches will be as a result of a delay caused by a German court ruling.

Asked if a banking license for the ESM could be more of a long-term option than a near-term possibility, the official said: "It would be much more a matter of months than years."

Lexus GS 450h, 2013

With a five vehicle hybrid line-up, Lexus reinforces its commitment to hybrid technology with the all-new 2013 Lexus GS 450h. When it was introduced for the 2007 model year, the GS 450h was the first hybrid-powered luxury sport sedan to enter the market. Today, the Lexus GS 450h is the world's first premium performance sedan to be equipped with a V6 Atkinson cycle gas engine and two-motor hybrid system, in a front engine rear-wheel drive vehicle.

The hybrid version of the 2013 GS 350 incorporates improvements to its hybrid powertrain and is equipped with a second generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system. Lexus GS 450h engineers have aimed for reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, while providing exhilarating performance.

With a total system power output of 338 hp, the Lexus GS 450h will accelerate effortlessly from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Conversely, fuel consumption is expected to be improved by more than 30 percent. The GS 450h is targeting certification as a Super-Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II (SULEV II). The new GS hybrid also features a Drive Mode selector. In addition to the Normal mode, the driver can customize the driving experience using Eco, Sport S, Sport S+ and EV modes.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
As with all Lexus hybrid vehicles, the new Lexus GS 450h is a full hybrid capable of operating in gas-only or electric-only modes, as well as a combination of both. Its Lexus Hybrid Drive system features an ultra-smooth running, Atkinson cycle 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a compact, high-output, water-cooled permanent magnet electric motor. The two powerplants drive the rear wheels both independently and in tandem, as needed.

In addition to the gas engine and electric motor, the new GS 450h's hybrid drive system a generator; a high-performance nickel-metal hydride battery; a power split device which, via planetary reduction gears, combines and re-allocates power from the engine, electric motor and generator according to operational requirements; and a compact power control unit to govern the high speed interaction of the system components.

Adapted specifically for the hybrid powertrain and a first for premium performance sedans, the 3.5-liter V6, DOHC engine benefits from several technical improvements including the adoption of the Atkinson Cycle engine design to optimize the fuel-efficient benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive.

Compression is delayed in an Atkinson Cycle engine, because the intake valves close late. This creates a high expansion ratio for less compression, reducing intake and exhaust energy losses and converting combustion energy to engine power more effectively.

A high compression ratio of 13:1; a new, mid-port intake tumble generator; and the adoption of the latest evolution of Lexus' four-stroke, direct injection technology, D-4S, help the Lexus GS 450h achieve better fuel consumption.

With one injector installed in the combustion chamber and a second mounted in the intake port, D-4S combines the strengths of both direct and port injection, realizing optimum engine efficiency throughout the power band and improving torque across the rev range, while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions.

The D-4S system features new slit-type injector nozzles with a modified port shape, a higher fuel pressure for more efficient combustion, and idle port injection for improved NHV characteristics.

Engine noise, vibration and friction have been lowered through the adoption of lightweight chain technology.

The cooling performance of the hybrid system's Power Control Unit (PCU) helps reduce fuel consumption and has been improved through the adoption of dual cooling paths and a single-piece, integrated AC/DC converter.

System control has been enhanced. The PCU boosts motor drive voltage to a maximum 650V in Sport mode and limits it to a maximum of 500V in Eco mode under normal driving conditions where maximum output is not required. The motor is driven at lower voltage to provide a more environmentally-advanced driving performance to help enhance fuel efficiency.

The electric motor features lighter mounts and reduced friction. The system's regenerative braking operation range has been expanded, contributing to further improvements in fuel efficiency. In addition, the battery layout has been redesigned. A new stacked configuration maximizing luggage space allows the 2013 GS 450h to have more cargo area than the previous generation gas model.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
All second-generation GS hybrid models have a new platform that is designed to be more rigid compared to the previous models. Engineers conducted extensive platform testing, ultimately increasing the number of spot welds and adding laser welds in very specific locations. The track works in combination with a revised suspension design to assure a more solid stance and superior cornering performance.

The new suspension system is designed to help guide the 2013 GS through corners with precision. In the front, upper and lower control arms are made from aluminum and employ larger bushings. The rear subframe has been completely redesigned to accommodate an all-new multi-link rear suspension, using improved suspension geometry that retains tire cornering force and enhances rear control. With the stiffer platform and lighter components, the shocks can use lighter-viscosity oil, so they move easily and respond to small inputs more quickly.

The use of front and rear aluminum control arms helps reduce unsprung weight and results in significant improvements in agility, roll damping, ride comfort, body control and steering precision. Overall, the suspension is lighter and stronger, allowing it to react to driver input readily, and ride quietly without harshness. Ventilated disc brakes featuring four-piston aluminum front calipers includes the latest electronic enhancements to help provide braking balance and control.

The standard 17-inch alloy wheels are paired with 225/50R17 tires while the optional 18-inch alloy wheels are equipped with 235/45R18 tires. The Lexus GS 450h's Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system characteristics have been modified to provide greater responsiveness from the first touch of the pedal.

Safety/Security Features
Like the GS 350, the GS 450h will be standard equipped with 10 airbags, including a knee airbag for both driver and front passenger. Rear seat occupants have seat-mounted side airbags, and all four outboard occupants are equipped with side curtain airbags. Also standard are new Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats that reduce the space between the occupant's head and headrest, to help limit excessive head movement, and help decrease the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain types of collisions. Standard seatbelts with pretensioners with force limiters used for front and outboard rear seats further assist occupant protection.

Available options to help further enhance safety include a pre-collision system, which uses the dynamic radar cruise control system to provide early warning of upcoming objects that might result in a collision. The system also uses a Lexus first infrared camera to monitor the driver's eyes to check on driver status. In the event that the driver does not appear to be looking forward when a collision appears imminent, the system will initiate the warning at an earlier threshold. If the driver still does not respond and make the appropriate maneuver, the system will initiate light braking intervention up to two seconds prior to impact, designed to help to lessen the severity of the collision.

Other available safety systems include a Night Vision System that enhances driver visibility at night; Heads Up Display (HUD); a Blind Spot Monitor that helps detect vehicles in rear/side blind spots; and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW). LKA provides a small amount of active steering torque to help maintain course, while the LDW feature alerts the driver if the system detects that the vehicle is beginning to drift out of the lane.

Exterior Design
The 2013 GS expresses a new generation of Lexus' design philosophy with its precisely sculpted exterior and will lead the rest of the lineup in an entirely new direction. When designers shaped the GS they visualized the flow of air around it and, like the LFA supercar, maximized aerodynamic efficiency.

Exclusive to the hybrid model is a unique three-lamp design that aligns the turn signal and Lexus-first high and low beam LED lamps in a single horizontal row. The improved illumination and beam range provided by LED lamps offers better visibility even under low beam driving conditions. In addition, the rear bumper of the Lexus GS 450h covers the exhaust pipe apertures. The GS 450h can also be distinguished by Lexus' signature blue hybrid badging.

The GS fuses distinctive style with engineering functionality. Fins incorporated into the side of the tail lamps and the design of the trunk area all help direct air over and past the car. The rear bumper underbody area was designed for reduced wind resistance to help keep the car steady. Finally, air inlets located on the outer edges of the lower grille serve as cooling ducts.

The signature spindle grille with its trapezoidal contours evolved from current Lexus styling and fully integrates into the aggressive front bumper allowing for efficient airflow. This distinctive Lexus design feature combined with the deep-set, high-tech headlamps and L-shaped LED daytime running lamps further express the vehicle's confident and dynamic character.

From the side, the GS projects the image of a spacious sport sedan with a road-hugging wider stance. The tapered lower rocker panel and the short front overhang give the vehicle a sense of motion. Width-enhancing front and rear wheel arches adds an athletic stance enhancing the vehicle's dynamic presence.

The rear bumper features centered aero fins to help control underbody airflow. Combined with the L-shaped LED tail lamps, a Lexus design cue, these rear bumper features lend a high-performance appearance. Overall, the new GS sheet metal represents a significant extension of the Lexus L-finesse philosophy that is the core of all Lexus product design.

The GS line-up will feature three colors that are new to the Lexus color palette: Riviera Red, Meteor Blue Mica and Liquid Platinum. Vehicles in Riviera Red will benefit from glass flakes incorporated into the coating that adds a high level of brilliance to the paint. Lexus engineers developed a new advanced coating process for Liquid Platinum exteriors. The GS will be the first Lexus to adopt this new coating technology. Vehicles with the Liquid Platinum exterior will appear more radiant as an additional metallic texture gives both strong shading and defined, sharp highlights. This metallic effect makes subtle and defined bodylines more noticeable and the surface appear finely polished.

Interior Design
The Lexus GS 450h will share the same luxurious and technological amenities as its gas counterpart, including next generation Remote Touch; analog clock with LED indicators, carved from an ingot; and a new energy-saving auto climate control system called S-Flow that focuses airflow only to the front area where passengers are actually seated. A few notable differences include a bamboo-finished steering wheel which reinforces the sustainability of the GS 450h, and the hybrid monitor.

The rise of social media in retail | Talk NYC

As the web has evolved, so has shopping. At first the internet was static with only the few experts create content but now anyone can imprint themselves on the web. It?s a living, social thing. The social web means people have a voice and they increasingly want to speak to and share with their peers. This interactivity means web retail brands can no longer ignore their customers and need to start engaging with people discussing their brand.

Social networks give retail brands the opportunity to form a relationship with millions of customers and also speak to them individually. And as more people shop and spend money online ? online retail sales increased by 14% last year to more than ?50bn according to Kelkoo ? retail brands need to get their online social strategy right. Retail has certainly reacted to the social age and almost every brand has some form of presence on social media whether it?s a Facebook page, a Twitter handle or a Pinterest board. Brands maybe drawing millions upon millions of people to their Facebook page, but just because people are ?liking? or ?retweeting? doesn?t mean they?re buying. And that is surely the end goal of brands developing and maintaining a social media presence. A social strategy needs to lead to increased desire for products and then drive sales.

Social communities are the perfect place for brands to connect with their audience as it taps into a psychological urge for people to talk and share with people who have similar passions. A recent social commerce study by JWT Intelligence highlighted the effect social is having on shopping. It found that over 40% of men and over a third of women are more likely to purchase something if a friend has recommended it on a social network. However, a survey by Ad Age found that only 17% of marketing executives believe generating sales leads and pushing a social commerce strategy with Facebook advertising is important. This shows the majority of brands do not see the potential of social commerce. As well as this a number of retail brands have found it?s not that simple to build an audience on social networks and expect them to turn into avid shoppers. GAP and JC Penny are just two retailers who have active Facebook communities and so opened a Facebook store to cash in on their audience engagement. But both found F-commerce wasn?t that easy and shuttered their stores shortly after opening. One reason F-commerce isn?t taking off could be a lack of trust ? the social commerce study found three quarters of people think Facebook isn?t secure enough to make purchases on.

Social can be used to create a community, generate engagement and drive sales. Social commerce does exist. However, people need the right social environment to engage with a brand and then be encouraged to buy its products. Cosmetic retailer Sephora, owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, has created its own interactive shopping social space launching its online Beauty talk community. It has brought its customers together and encouraged them to discuss their passion ? beauty. Sephora found that by creating a community and by opening itself to its customers it was flooded with people dying to talk to each other. Not only is Sephora facilitating this discussion ? putting themselves at the heart of the community ? but Beauty talk is making their customers buy more. A Beauty talk community user spends two-and-a-half times more than the average Sephora customer. While the most active community users ? or ?superfans? ? who post the most content and are highly engaged spends ten times more. This shows that social communities can pay. Sephora has created a social community where they do not push their products at their customers but instead customer discussions lead to them recommending products to each other.

Social opens up communications between a business and its customer base. The benefit of opening up a direct line of communication is that people start to feel part of the business. If people feel part of something they?re more likely to spend money and also help the business out. Social media allows people to voice their opinions and people like to shout when they?re unhappy but also when they have suggestions. By listening to customers, businesses can modify their offerings and products in order to meet their customers? desire which will mean they?re more likely to sell. It can also create an entirely new revenue stream if the suggestions lead to an innovative new product or service. Giffgaff is one business which crowdsources new ideas from their community of customers to shape their offerings. With upwards of 9,000 ideas over the past few years, the community has seen over 270 ideas implemented to help improve its mobile service ? and an additional 100 community-generated ideas are in development.

As the social web has developed it has become a muddled environment as more social networks spring up. As well as forums and comment sections there?s established networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn but also upstarts such as Pinterest, Path, Instagram or Viddy. This messy ecosystem causes retailers issues as time and money needs to be invested in different social networks. But instead of just looking at networks which have a large user base they should consider building their own branded community to gather all their passionate fans together. The technology is here, social is well established and so is e-commerce, but we are just beginning to see the two fuse together and retailers start to develop successful social e-commerce strategies. But one thing is certain, social commerce is here and retailers need to incorporate it into their business now.

Four Insights on Longer-term B2B Telemarketing Productivity ...

b2b telemarketingIn this post, we?ll try to take a broader and longer-term look at B2B telemarketing campaigns and find out some key insights on determining the level of productivity that these projects can provide a business in the long-run. That?s what we want right? We want solutions that work not only in the current marketing year or the next but the periods after that as well.

B2B telemarketing is very much a part of the modern marketing strategy despite core changes in the way that lead generation projects are being conducted. Today, it plays a transformed yet still fundamentally similar role in the marketing mix. Accordingly, cold calling will continue to be a component of the toolkit.

As such, it?s important to look at expert services with a longer time horizon than just the current year. Here are four considerations on gauging longer-term B2B marketing productivity:

Performance Consistency

Typically, we gauge effectiveness and efficiency using metrics and analytics that are projected and measured on a per-campaign basis. We normally look at the ROI of a specific in-house or outsourced marketing project and compare it to a previous reading or forecasted value in order to make our assessment.

However, on a longer-term time horizon, ROI and other telephone marketing performance indicators need to show a consistent or improving trend in order for your targeted marketing project to be labeled as ?viable? in the long-run. Of course, there?s no way for us to predict with absolute certainty what our B2B campaigns will do in the next marketing years. But we can make certain projections for now and compare actual measurements when the time comes.

Contribution to Revenues and Earnings

What percentage do sales leads contribute to the overall revenue figure? More importantly, how does calling affect profits? In general, a marketing strategy can be considered good for the long-run if it increases both top-line and bottom-line figures. This rule applies to all marketing channels being used including telemarketing.

The concept of ?sustained marketing? underscores the importance of comparing how channels like telemarketing impact short-term revenues and profitability from period to period in order to determine whether a certain platform can produce the needed growth that the business is targeting. Otherwise, such a strategy would only be a temporary tactic.

Brand Building

In order to be viable in the long-run, your B2B telemarketing projects need to reflect your company?s branding efforts. But how does calling your prospects do this?

Telemarketing should become part of the experience that your customer or prospects are looking for in engaging with your company. Every aspect in the marketing campaign ? from your script to your staff ? should be centered on prospect/customer education not product promotion. Information is what characterizes the brand experience that B2B customers/prospects are demanding. That?s why it should remain at the core of your campaigns.

Customer Relationship

Sustainable marketing channels help build strong customer relationships not only for enhancing the potential for repeat business or reduced marketing costs but for achieving the intangible benefits of a loyal customer base as well. Telemarketing does have a place in a relationship-building marketing strategy because of its distinctly personal nature. That?s why you need to evaluate how your own cold calling efforts or a partner company?s telemarketing services generate not only leads but loyal customers as well.
