Reward Offered for Information about the Poisoning of 6 Bald Eagles ...

The Humane Society of the United States and The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for poisoning six bald eagles in Northampton County, Va. The HSUS and HSWLT offer adds to an existing reward of $2,500 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, six bald eagles were found poisoned between March 8 and March 14 in Birdsnest, Va. near Seaside Road. Five of the eagles died and the surviving eagle was rehabilitated by the Wildlife Center of Virginia and was released Thursday.?

?Eagles are our national symbol and we must bring the person or persons responsible for this appalling crime to justice,? said Laura Donahue, Virginia state director for The HSUS.??The Humane Society of the United States applauds the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for its tireless investigation efforts and the Wildlife Center of Virginia for caring for the eagle.?

Anyone with information concerning the poisoning is asked to contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent Chris Mina from the OLE?s Richmond, Va. office at 804-771-2883.?

?Poaching:

• Wildlife officials estimate that nationwide, tens of millions of animals are killed illegally each year.
• It is estimated that only 1 percent to 5 percent of poached animals come to the attention of law enforcement.
• Poachers injure or kill wildlife anytime, anywhere and sometimes do so in particularly cruel ways. Wildlife officials report that poachers often commit other crimes as well.
• The HSUS and HSWLT work with state and federal wildlife agencies to offer rewards of $5,000 for information leading to arrest and conviction of suspected poachers.?

The HSUS and HSWLT work to curb poaching across the county. The HSUS recently doubled its standard poaching reward from $2,500 to $5,000 thanks to a generous donation from HSUS board member Cathy Kangas and her husband Ed Kangas of New Canaan, Conn.
