And Lunch Turned Into Dinner ?

I instantly bonded with Hitch in 1998 when I tagged along to an interview he did with a friend of mine over lunch. The friend left after an hour, but we stayed at the restaurant talking about politics, literature, and history. Lunch turned into dinner, and finally his wife, Carol, summoned him home on the grounds that 10 hours straight of talking to anyone was more than enough for one sitting. This set the stage for an abiding friendship based on such marathon conversations.

Shirley Ann Jackson serves as a role model for the movement to promote improved education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A book about her for young people captures her lifelong curiosity

Shirley Ann Jackson, President, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Image: World Economic Forum/Wikimedia Commons/Flickr

The president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., came to that job in 1999 with a stellar resume. Besides being the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Shirley Ann Jackson headed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission during the Clinton administration and was a physicist at Bell Laboratories and other notable research institutions. How did this lightning-quick thinker develop her interest in both science and education policy? Look for a hint in this chapter excerpt (pdf) of a book for young people that chronicles Jackson's early life as someone with "a curious mind and a passion for uncovering the secrets that lay hidden in the world around us."

Read more about her in Strong Force: The Story of Shirley Ann Jackson, Joseph Henry Press, an imprint of The National Academies Press, 2006.

For an in-depth Q&A with Dr. Jackson about our energy future and strengthening science eduation, read "Speaking Out on the "Quiet Crisis"" in the December issue of Scientific American.

Jackson daughter tells 'Ellen' about acting dreams (omg!)

In this Dec. 13, 2011 photo released by Warner Bros., talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, right, welcomes Paris Jackson, daughter of the late pop star Michael Jackson during a taping of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in Burbank, Calif. The episode will air on Thursday. (AP Photo/Warner Bros., Michael Rozman)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michael Jackson's daughter says she was inspired to be an actress after seeing her father in the film "Moonwalker."

"My dad was in the movie 'Moonwalker' and I knew he could sing really well, but I didn't know he could act," Paris Jackson told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, according to a transcript of the episode to air Thursday. "I saw that and I said, 'Wow, I want to be just like him.'"

The film featuring Jackson's signature dance move and other videos was released in 1988.

Paris said her father encouraged her and did improvisation sessions to develop her skills. The 13-year-old has been cast alongside Larry King in a film based on a new children's book, "Lundon's Bridge and the Three Keys," which is in early stages of development.

The Internet Movie Database, known as IMDB, shows the film is tentatively scheduled for a 2013 release, although filmmakers have not presented the teen's proposed acting contract to a Los Angeles court as required because she is a minor.

Paris also talked about the lengths that her father took to protect her identity for an episode that will air on Thursday.

She said she has had a normal childhood, thanks to her father's decision to place her and her two brothers in masks when they were in public.

She said no one recognized her when she began attending school after her father's death in June 2009.

"I was like, yes, I have a chance to be normal," she said.

The pop superstar protected his children's identities, dressing them in costumes and covering their faces when they were in public. They have since been in the public eye, appearing onstage at their father's televised memorial service, the Grammy Awards and other television appearances.

She said she initially thought wearing the mask was stupid, but later came to realize that it was for her and her brothers' protection.

Europe's banks face new credit squeeze (AP)

PARIS ? The rates banks charge to lend dollars to one another are at their highest since late september as the financial system faces a new credit squeeze.

A slew of bad news has hit European banks this week. Five large lenders were downgraded and a sixth, Commerzbank, has seen its stock plummet amid speculation it might need more government support.

Banks depend on loans from each other for a large part of their daily funding. When fears grow that a bank may fail, that credit market tightens.

Banks are also under pressure due to the risky government debt they hold, while their stocks are plunging and governments want them to keep more cash in rainy-day funds.

Planet found orbiting habitable zone of sun-like star

MOFFET FIELD, California | Mon Dec 5, 2011 9:07pm EST

MOFFET FIELD, California (Reuters) - The most Earth-like planet ever discovered is circling a star 600 light years away, a key finding in an ongoing quest to learn if life exists beyond Earth, scientists said on Monday.

The planet, called Kepler-22b, joins a list of more than 500 planets found to orbit stars beyond our solar system. It is the smallest and the best positioned to have liquid water on its surface -- among the ingredients necessary for life on Earth.

"We are homing in on the true Earth-sized, habitable planets," said San Jose State University astronomer Natalie Batalha, deputy science team lead for NASA's Kepler Space Telescope that discovered the star.

The telescope, which was launched three years ago, is staring at about 150,000 stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra, looking for faint and periodic dimming as any circling planets pass by, relative to Kepler's line of sight.

Results will be extrapolated to determine the percentage of stars in the Milky Way galaxy that harbor potentially habitable, Earth-size planets.

This is the first detection of a potentially habitable world orbiting a Sun-like star, scientists reported in findings to be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Kepler-22b is 600 light years away. A light year is the distance light travels in a year, about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km).

GROUND TELESCOPES

Planets about the same distance from their parent stars as Earth take roughly a year to complete an orbit. Scientists want to see at least three transits to be able to rule out other explanations for fluctuations in a star's light, such as small companion stars. Results also are verified by ground and other space telescopes.

Kepler-22b, which is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth, sits squarely in its star's so-called "habitable zone," the region where liquid water could exist on the surface. Follow-up studies are under way to determine if the planet is solid, like Earth, or more gaseous like Neptune.

"We don't know anything about the planets between Earth-size and Neptune-size because in our solar system we have no examples of such planets. We don't know what fraction are going to be rocky, what fraction are going to be water worlds, what fraction are ice worlds. We have no idea until we measure one and see," Batalha said at a news conference at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffet Field, California.

If Kepler-22b has a surface and a cushion of atmosphere similar to Earth's, it would be about 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 C), about the same as a spring day in Earth's temperate zone.

Among the 2,326 candidate planets found by the Kepler team, 10 are roughly Earth-size and reside in their host stars' habitable zones.

Another team of privately funded astronomers is scanning the target stars for non-naturally occurring radio signals, part of a project known as SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

"As soon as we find a different, a separate, an independent example of life somewhere else, we're going to know that it's ubiquitous throughout the universe," said astronomer Jill Tarter, director of the SETI Institute in Mountain View.

The Kepler team is meeting for its first science conference this week.

95% Moneyball

Billy Beane: There are rich teams, there are poor teams, then there's fifty feet of crap, and then there's us.Moneyball is a solid triple base hit. It isn't quite a home run, but has the right players and the right manager to get the job done. Lets start with the best player, Brad Pitt, who gives a terrific performance here, and is what makes the film so effective. I feel that I must batter-up Jonah Hill, who I thought did a super job transferring from Comedy to Drama and plays his role subtly and professionally. This had such a Social Network feel to it (especially since Fincher's Dragon Tattoo trailer was before it), since it was written by Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian. Learning about Billy Beane has never been more exciting, and director Bennett Miller makes the experience of Moneyball quite exhilarating.Moneyball is a true story, based on a novel with the same name by Michael Lewis, chronicling the life of Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics. At this point in Billy's life, his team is handicapped with the lowest salary in baseball. To get his team back on top and to the world series, he must find a competitive advantage for his team to win games. So instead of physically training and working with the players, Beane, along with his new assistant Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), they use statistical data to manage the players' value to guarantee wins, and change the game forever.First things first; Moneyball is not meant to be for fans of baseball, it may be a tad more beneficial to them, but this is a film for anyone who is at all interested in an inspirational sports film, with Brad Pitt. Moneyball looks fantastic. The cinematography is handled very diligently by Wally Pfister; who does quite a decent job putting the audience in the world of baseball, and all of the game scenes are lighted perfectly and with high intelligence. You can tell a lot of input was put into this, considering this film has been in post-production for quite awhile until it was finally released. In a film like this, it's important to keep your audience interested and eager for a second viewing; while it doesn't quite play well on that second reason, this is a very interesting story. Prior to going into this, I had no knowledge of who Billy Beane was or what he did for the game of baseball (which is generally the tactic I use when going into a film I'm excited about), and judging from the trailers, I thought he was an antagonist. Boy, was I incorrect to make that assumption. Beane is surprisingly a good guy, and it's time to bring up the man who was Beane, Brad Pitt.In my opinion, this is probably Pitt's most contained performance yet. It's not his best (see Fight Club or Benjamin Button), but it is quite impressive. What makes the atmosphere of his performance unique from all of his other roles is how low-key he played it. I don't know much about Billy Beane, but it seemed only fitting that Pitt would take on another tough role. Regardless, I still found it low-key and different from his usual bad-ass type roles, which was nice for a change, and I think might be in the running for [another] Academy Award. Aside from Pitt, I enjoyed the performances from Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who were both very effective in their roles.I wouldn't classify myself as an avid baseball lover or watcher (I'm a pretty big fan of the Chicago Cubs), but I am known from time to time to tune in to a game. For me, baseball is a bit uninteresting to watch all the way through (one of the many reasons why I was skeptical about seeing this), but I found myself fascinated all the way through Moneyball. It put a "twist" on the game, adding a little Social Network-statistic-type mumbo jumbo in. You also have to admire the chutzpah that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) holds to keep tackling such complex subjects, and succeeding each time. The film was directed by Brett Ratner, who has directed some pretty big blockbuster hits such as the Rush Hour trilogy and X-Men: The Last Stand as well as the upcoming Tower Heist. Looking at those titles, it seems that Ratner can direct anything. He goes from buddy-cop to superheroes to baseball. Now do I think he is a good director? Yes, I do. Regardless of his few failed attempts of what's considered a "good" movie, I've always enjoyed his work, and Moneyball is definitely his most effective film in terms of drama and how it is shot. There was but one fatal flaw that kept me from giving this flick a perfect rating, and that is the replay value. I can't imagine myself viewing this multiple times, which is odd, because I've seen Fincher's The Social Network 20-30 times tops. Nevertheless, even for an individual viewing, Moneyball is worth seeing due to it's stellar performances, interesting plot, solid direction, and a magnificent script from Aaron Sorkin. Moneyball is not a home run, but it sure does swing for the fences.

NASA spacecraft exploring solar system's edge (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A long-running NASA spacecraft that's been exploring the fringes of the solar system has entered new territory.

The space agency said Monday the Voyager 1 spacecraft is in a new region of the solar system that's different than what it's been studying the past five years.

New evidence presented at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco shows Voyager 1 has reached a point where the sun has little influence.

Voyager 1 still has a little ways to go before it leaves the solar system and enters interstellar space ? or the space between stars.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, are hurtling in opposite directions toward interstellar space.

Is Child Sexual Abuse on the Rise? (LiveScience.com)

With the stream of accusations of child sexual abuse not losing any gusto lately, from the ever-growing charges against former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky to allegations of such behaviors by assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine, it'd be easy to assume a real upsurge in such abuse.

But that may not be the case.?

First, Sandusky was accused of sexually molesting at least eight boys over the past 15 years; he has pleaded not guilty to the more than 40 charges against him.

Then last week Fine of Syracuse University was fired amid accusations of sexual abuse. So far three men, including two former Syracuse ball-boys, have come forward stating that Fine molested them as minors.

Neither Sandusky nor Fine has been found guilty of any crime, but these are only the latest in what seems to be a year filled with news reports about sexual harassment and sexual abuse. Earlier this year an ABC News investigation revealed that USA Swimming (the governing body for the sport up to and including the U.S. Olympic team) has banned for life nearly 40 swimming coaches over the last decade because of sexual misconduct. [Child Abuse: Why People Look the Other Way]

So what's going on?

According to the nation's top experts, children are actually safer from physical and sexual abuse than they have been for decades. A National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect issued by the Department of Health and Human Services found that both physical and sexual abuse of children have dropped significantly over the past 20 years: From 2005 to 2006, an estimated 553,000 children suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse, down 26 percent from the estimated 743,200 abuse victims in 1993. And between 1993 and 2005, the number of sexually abused children dropped 38 percent, while number of children who experienced physical abuse fell by 15 percent and those who were emotionally abused declined by 27 percent.

In fact, incidence of sexual abuse of children began to drop two decades ago, according to Dr. David Finkelhor, director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire.

In his book "Childhood Victimization: Violence, Crime and Abuse in the Lives of Young People" (Oxford 2008), Dr. Finkelhor notes, "The child victimization declines of the 1990s were something new, and not simply the extension of trend lines from the past. For example, available data on child abuse show strong increases in all forms of maltreatment from the mid-1970s into the 1990s. After a short plateau, the sexual abuse decline seemed to start in 1992, and the physical abuse decline gained momentum after 1996. Many analysts did not interpret the earlier rise as necessarily indicative of a real increase in child maltreatment but rather as the result of a new public and professional mobilization to identify and report cases. But some data suggested real increases in the 1980s."

Overall, Dr. Finkelhor told LiveScience.com, "There is very little evidence that child sexual abuse is on the rise in the U.S., and considerable evidence that it is declining, including data from law enforcement, child protection and surveys of victims themselves." He added that though the prevalence of child sexual abuse worldwide is hard to assess, "there are some indicators of decline in other countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom."

Many of the recent accusations of sexual abuse date back many years; just because the public is hearing more about it now doesn't mean that it's on the increase. Thus while the barrage of news reports about sexual abuse of children may make parents fearful, the reality is that kids today are safer than ever.

Causes of the drop in child sexual abuse are complex and not completely understood. Some experts point out that the overall crime rate dropped significantly during the same time, and that child abuse rates fell along with murder and assault rates. Other analyses credit the economic prosperity of the 1980s and 1990s as improving overall social conditions, while still others note that tougher penalties for sex crimes led to higher numbers of offenders being jailed. It's also likely that greater social awareness of child abuse through television news (and even Hollywood films such as "Mystic River") resulted in parents taking more precautions for their children's safety. Like most social problems, there's no simple answer.

First significant snow of winter to hit central U.S. (Reuters)

AUSTIN, Tex (Reuters) ? Up to 12 inches of snow could fall in parts of Colorado and New Mexico on Saturday as a storm system moves through the central U.S., bringing what forecasters said would be the first significant snow of the season to the region.

From New Mexico to the Great Lakes, the storm that brought damaging winds to Western states and several inches of snow to the Rockies on Friday is set to drop four to seven inches of snow in other states in the region, including Nebraska and Kansas, according to forecasters.

Parts of Nebraska were already blanketed with snow on Saturday morning. And residents of the high country in Arizona were on the lookout for snow later Saturday as well, with forecasters predicting up to eight inches in Flagstaff by Saturday night.

The same system was bringing rain to parts of north Texas, as well as parts of Michigan and Iowa.

Temperatures below freezing was causing dangerous driving conditions in Michigan, where rain was freezing on roads, according to Accuweather.com.

The northern Great Lakes can expect snow accumulation on Saturday night, forecasters said.

Travel on several interstate highways is expected to be affected by the wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain, according to Accuweather.com forecasters, including I-25, I-29, I-35, I-39, I-40, I-70, I-80, I-90 and I-94.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory on Saturday warning of potential heavy rain in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas on Saturday night in advance of a cold front expected to hit the area late Saturday or early Sunday.

A second winter storm is expected to develop on Sunday evening in New Mexico, across Texas and into Oklahoma, bringing temperatures down to the 20s for some areas and sparking the potential for snow, sleet or ice.

Also starting Sunday, forecasters will be watching for heavy rains to drench an already saturated area from Arkansas to the Ohio Valley, raising the potential for floods in that area next week, according to Accuweather.com.

Japan?s car makers try to rev-up market

Franck Robichon / EPA

Toyota's concept car 'Fun-Vii' is displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday. Click on the photo to see a complete SLIDESHOW of the concept cars on display at this year's Tokyo Motor Show.

By Arata Yamamoto, NBC News Producer

TOKYO ? Japanese car makers have had a tough year.

First the devastating March earthquake and tsunami struck at their supply chain for key auto parts and then flooding in Thailand forced some companies to suspend factory production for weeks. But the natural disasters only compounded larger economic problems for the car companies: the record high value of the yen has greatly hindered profits from export sales.

Add to those issues the growing reluctance among young Japanese to own vehicles, plus the consistent aging of Japan?s population, and all indications point to a shrinking domestic market. It?s what many here fear will eventually result in Japan's ?industrial hollowing.?

The bi-annual Tokyo Motor Show will kick-off this weekend despite the adverse obstacles. With more domestic companies participating, a new event venue, and showcasing futuristic energy-efficient vehicles, the show hopes to re-invigorate Japan's domestic auto market.

A ?smartphone on wheels?
In his opening remarks to the press Toyota President Akio Toyoda vowed he would "never give up? and presented the company's new slogan: "Fun to Drive, Again.??

And to do just that, Toyota unveiled its new "86" sports car, and the futuristic concept car, the Fun-Vii (which stands for Fun Vehicle Interactive Internet).

Critics have dubbed the Fun-Vii a "smartphones on wheels" or something straight out of the sci-fi movie ?TRON.? Cloaked in a sleek black casing, both the exterior and the interior of the Fun-Vii car are designed to act as projection panels for the driver to display images or color depending on the "mood" of the driver.

It also comes with a "navigation concierge" where a Princess Leia-like hologram guides the driver through virtual street maps, and utilizing satellite GPS readings, the car will warn the driver of any in-coming vehicles tucked behind the corner of a building.

At the moment Toyota says there are no production plans for the Fun Vii.

Small cars for the urban, silver-haired consumer
Toyota?s real bid for the domestic market is the Aqua, their latest compact-class hybrid car, which is smaller and more budget-friendly than their popular Prius series.

All of the automakers are showcasing their new fleet of compact-sized vehicles, reflecting Japanese consumer demands for more affordable, even smaller-sized cars with improved fuel efficiency and an emphasis on conservation.

It?s also a trend which reflects the nation's increasingly silver population.

"By 2015, one out of four people will be over 65 years old. And our vision is that those people will be able to continue to lead an active life," said Honda Chief Engineer Ikuo Kurachi explaining to me the thinking behind their new "mini, mini-van" the N Box Plus.

The compact mini-van is equipped with easy-to-open sliding doors and a large interior space with a slope that can hold a 4-wheel electric scooter, the MonPal, which is designed for senior citizens. The idea is that for long distances, one can drive the N Box and then for more local mobility they can take out the MonPal.

Nissan is also looking to the future with their third generation electric vehicle concept model, the Pivo3, a three-seater with a central steering wheel and minimum turning radius of about six feet that allows drivers to park practically anywhere.

"It features technologies that we consider are going to be important for the future, particularly around urban areas. Zero emission. Highly maneuverable, urban car," said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.

It?s a design that takes into account a future in which as? Japan?s population moves, it moves into more urban and compact ?smart cities.?

Main problem: How to keep making money in Japan
But despite all these grand vision and ideas, at the moment the biggest obstacle for all of the Japanese automakers is the strong value of the yen. Not only did the yen hit a post-war high in October, it?s 50 percent higher than what it was three years ago.

"Some people can say: You're making money and you're growing. Yes, we're making money and we're growing ? outside Japan," said Ghosn, speaking about the current state of the Japanese currency. "But today our main problem is we cannot justify continuing to invest in Japan and projects in Japan. And that's exactly where the problem is.?

Barnes & Noble's Q2 earnings reveal Nook to be a $220 million business, Nook Tablet said to be fastest-selling yet

Barnes & Noble's second quarter earnings weren't all good news for the company -- it reported a net loss of $6.6 million and an ever-so-slight dip in total sales from $1.90 billion to $1.89 billion -- but it did have a fair bit to boast about on the technology side of things. Sales on its B&N.com website increased 17 percent year-over-year, totaling $206 million for the quarter, and the value of the company's Nook business (including devices and content) now stands at $220 million, up a full 85 percent. The company also revealed that its new Nook Tablet has been the fastest-selling Nook device to date, although it's not providing any specific sales numbers, noting only that it expects to sell "millions of devices" during its third quarter. Additional figures can be found at the source link below.

Daihatsu FC ShowCase concept: who doesn't want a 60-inch TV in a van?

Here's a funny one from the Tokyo Motor Show. Daihatsu's squarish concept EV van, dubbed the FC ShowCase, is basically a spacious four-seater packing plenty of goodies: a giant wing door, some blue lights on the wheels, an LED panel on the left skirt, side-view cameras instead of mirrors, a funky touch panel steering wheel, a small heads-up display and a 60-inch TV.
