Twitter just released a new feature meant to help mobile-app developers make money?in direct competition with Facebook, which is also actively courting app makers.

The pitch isn't subtle, either: "More downloads for your apps," Twitter's developer site promises.

At an event for developers at its San Francisco headquarters Tuesday evening, Twitter unveiled an update to its Twitter Cards technology designed to push users to either download new apps or use the apps they've already installed more frequently.

A previous version of Twitter Cards displayed previews of photos, articles, and other linked content posted in a tweet. But those led to Web pages, not mobile apps, which made for a circuitous route for app downloads.

Facebook, likewise, is hoping to push app downloads, through its App Center directory and new features which highlight app activity in users' News Feeds and profile pages.

Both Facebook and Twitter also offer ads specifically meant to push app downloads. The new Twitter Cards feature seems intended to give app developers better unpaid or "organic" promotion, in the hopes that they'll also spend on paid ads. It also implicitly encourages developers to let users post to Twitter from within their apps.

Apps are a lucrative, fast-growing area of mobile advertising. With Google and Apple's app stores getting harder and harder to break into, app makers must pay to market their wares. Game makers, e-commerce sites, and dating services are heavy spenders.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Rutgers said it would reconsider its decision to retain basketball coach Mike Rice after a videotape aired showing him shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at players in practice and using gay slurs.

The videotape, broadcast Tuesday on ESPN, prompted scores of outraged social media comments as well as sharp criticism from Gov. Chris Christie and NBA star LeBron James.

Athletic director Tim Pernetti was given a copy of the video in late November by a former employee. He suspended Rice for three games a month later, fined him $50,000 and ordered him to attend anger management classes.

In an interview with WFAN Radio on Tuesday, Pernetti said university president Robert Barchi also viewed the tape last fall and agreed with the punishment.

But ESPN's broadcast prompted an outcry, led by the governor himself.

"Governor Christie saw the video today for the first time and he is obviously deeply disturbed by the conduct displayed and strongly condemns this behavior," spokesman Michael Drewniak said. "It's not the type of leadership we should be showing our young people and clearly there are questions about this behavior that need to be answered by the leaders at Rutgers University."

The Miami Heat's James weighed in with a tweet: "If my son played for Rutgers or a coach like that he would have some real explaining to do and I'm still gone whoop on him afterwards! C'mon."

Rice, who was hired by Pernetti three years ago, is 44-51 at Rutgers, including 16-38 in the Big East, after going 73-31 in three seasons at Robert Morris. The Scarlet Knights went 15-16 this season and 5-13 in the Big East.

Pernetti told WFAN that he understands why many are asking why Rice wasn't fired after the initial investigation.

"I spent more time with that option on whether we should fire Mike or not than any other option," Pernetti said. "At the same the results of the investigation where we ended up, the determination was made to suspend him. My biggest concern as the AD is that I am always trying to protect the interests and reputation of the university and that's what makes this one so difficult. There is a lot of hindsight, 20-20, .... that there will be no other option than to terminate Mike. I made that decision. I am accountable for it. I have to live with it."

Rice was Pernetti's first major hire after getting the AD's job.

"In the end I am not going to look back and say shoulda, woulda. All I can do is figure out going forward the decisions I can make to fix the problem for Rutgers," Pernetti he told the radio station.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Japan's benchmark stock index surged Wednesday as the Bank of Japan started its first policy meeting under a new governor committed to aggressive monetary action to end years of economic malaise.

Central bank chief Haruhiko Kuroda has vowed to do whatever it takes to break Japan out of its debilitating deflation. Kuroda, who assumed his post March 19, has pledged to cooperate with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's program of big government spending, monetary easing and economic reforms aimed at improving Japan's competitiveness.

Optimism about the meeting's outcome sent Japan's Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo soaring 2.6 percent to 12,320.52.

Elsewhere, however, Asian stock markets struggled to hold onto initial gains resulting from positive reports about the U.S. economy. Some investors were skeptical about a quick fix for Japan and were acting cautiously before the policy meeting ends Thursday.

"The market is starting to moderate its expectations a bit about what might happen," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.2 percent to 22,318.09 after a higher open. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.3 percent to 1,979.04. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.6 percent to 4,957.70 after a narrowing trade deficit boosted the Australian dollar, analysts said.

Benchmarks in the Philippines and Indonesia rose. China's Shanghai Composite Index added 0.1 percent to 2,230.83.

A fall in the yen enticed investors back into export shares; a weaker yen helps Japanese exporters by making their products cheaper in overseas markets. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. jumped 5.4 percent. Mazda Motor Corp. advanced 5.7 percent.

U.S. government figures released Tuesday showed a better-than-expected 3 percent rise in factory orders in February, the largest increase since September. In addition, March sales reports from auto makers were solid.

Those figures helped spur stock buying in the U.S.

The Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor's 500 index both closed at record highs Tuesday. The Dow closed up 0.6 percent at 14,662.01. The S&P 500 rose 0.5 percent to 1,570.25. The Nasdaq composite added 0.5 percent to 3,254.86.

Benchmark oil for May delivery was down 51 cents to $96.68 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained 12 cents to finish at $97.19 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2806 from $1.2813 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar rose to 93.49 yen from 93.35 yen.

Texas authorities are using helicopters and dogs to search for two "dangerous" Texas inmates who escaped from jail this morning by squeezing through a gate, leaving behind their black and white prison suits on the railroad tracks behind the jail.

Authorities believe Brian Tucker, 44, and John King, 39, escaped from Hopkins County Jail in Sulphur Springs, Texas, at around 8:30 a.m. today. The jail has approximately 80 inmates who are held there while they await trial.

"Both are considered dangerous," Deputy Alvin Jordan of the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office told ABCNews.com.

Area schools are on lockdown and businesses are on high alert, according to police.

Tucker was awaiting trial in jail for capital murder charges and King had been indicted for evading arrest.

"They were put out on rec yard to have outside rec and undoubtedly squeezed through the gate and took off," Jordan said. "We did find their black and whites about 100 yards behind the facility."

The recreation yard is an open space with a high fence and Hopkins County Sheriff Butch Adams said someone was supposed to be watching the inmates.

Tucker and King were both segregated from other inmates because of the types of crimes they have committed, according to Jordan.

Search dogs tracked their scents northeast, Adams said at a news conference.

"Right now, we don't know if they split up or if they're still together," Adams said. "We found their uniforms when they discarded them on the road behind us and the dogs tracking them and we found footprints."

It is unknown what the men are wearing or whether they may have used some kind of transportation after leaving the jail yard, Jordan said.

Asked if there is any reason to believe they could be armed, Jordan said, "At this point, unless they picked up anything from here to where they're at, the weapons part is unknown."

Their only known connection at this time is that they were inmates at the same time in the same jail with no known previous ties.

"We've still got a perimeter up and hopefully we'll find the," Adams told ABC News. "I've got a lot of good people and volunteers that have come in from other counties."

Authorities are warning people to be careful and call 911 if they see the men.

"If they're spotted, make sure they lock their doors, call 911 and tell us what area they're in," Jordan said. "Don't try to let them approach you."

Tucker is 5-foot-7-inches and about 170 pounds. He has brown eyes, brown hair and multiple tattoos. King is 5-foot-8-inches and 165 pounds. He has black hair, hazel eyes and multiple tattoos.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A gruesome injury that left Louisville guard Kevin Ware with a broken leg plunged Lucas Oil Stadium into horrified silence, with coach Rick Pitino wiping away tears and shocked teammates openly weeping during Sunday's Midwest Regional final.

Ware's right leg bent in such an awkward and frightening angle that CBS stopped showing replays shortly after the fall in the NCAA tournament matchup against Duke.

"The bone's 6 inches out of his leg and all he's yelling is, 'Win the game, win the game,'" Pitino said. "I've not seen that in my life. ... Pretty special young man."

Viewers who saw the injury on TV reacted on social networks and (hash)KevinWare shot to one of the top worldwide trending topics on Twitter. Video of the injury was posted on YouTube ? CBS initially replayed it twice before changing course.

With 6:33 left in the first half, Ware tried to contest a 3-pointer by Tyler Thornton. Ware's leg buckled when he landed, bending almost at a right angle.

School officials said Ware was taken to Methodist Hospital with a broken lower right leg. Louisville spokesman Kenny Klein said hospital officials told the school that Ware was "resting comfortably" and that the pain was "under control."

Klein said a team of doctors was being assembled. He was uncertain whether that meant Ware would undergo surgery in Indianapolis.

Pitino said Ware's leg broke in two spots.

"Basically, the bone popped out of the skin," he said. "It'll take a year to come back."

Pitino said it was the same injury former Louisville running back Michael Bush had in football. Bush, now with the Chicago Bears, has recovered to have a productive NFL career.

Ware was taken off the court on a stretcher.

The injury happened right in front of Pitino and the Louisville bench, and several Cardinals were overcome with emotion.

Louisville forward Wayne Blackshear fell to the floor, crying, and Chane Behanan looked as if he was going to be sick on the court, kneeling on his hands and feet. Peyton Siva sat a few feet away, a hand covering his mouth.

Luke Hancock patted Ware's chest as doctors worked on the sophomore and Russ Smith ? who is from New York City like Ware ? walked away, pulling his jersey over his eyes.

Someone finally pulled Behanan to his feet, but he doubled over and needed a few seconds to gather himself. As Ware was being loaded onto the stretcher, the Cardinals gathered at midcourt until Pitino called them over, saying that Ware wanted to talk to them before he left.

In the immediate aftermath, those who had been watching the game on television took to social media to express their concern. Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, who famously sustained a broken leg during a Monday night football game against the New York Giants, tweeted that, "Watching Duke/ Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware."

Louisville, the top overall seed in the tourney, went more than 3 minutes without scoring after the injury but regained its composure to take a 35-32 halftime lead and went on to an 85-63 victory.

"We won this for him," Pitino said. "We were all choked up with emotion for him. We'll get him back to normal. We've got great doctors, great trainers. We talked about it every timeout, 'Get Kevin home.'"

Ware, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from the Bronx, was instrumental in Louisville's victory over Oregon in the regional semifinals. He scored 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting in 25 minutes off the bench.

Behanan changed into Ware's jersey in closing moments of game and was tugging at it as the team celebrated at midcourt.
