Scientists step up hunt for bacterial genes tied to lyme disease

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Investigators at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) have accelerated the search for the bacterial genes that make the Lyme disease bacterium so invasive and persistent. The discovery could advance the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, which affects an estimated 30,000 Americans each year.

The researchers have developed a new technique that allowed them to test 15 times more bacterial genes than had been evaluated in the previous 30 years to ascertain their roles in infection. Findings appeared Oct. 25 in the online journal PLOS ONE.

Scientists hope to use this information to unravel the mystery of how the spiral-shaped bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi causes Lyme disease. Ticks carry the bacterium and transfer it to animals and humans when the tiny spider-like creatures bite. The Lyme disease microorganism was discovered in 1981.

"We believe that this will be one of the most significant publications in Lyme disease in the next several years. This global approach will help 'move the field forward' and also serve as a model for other pathogens with similar properties," said Steven Norris, Ph.D., the study's senior author and the vice chair for research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UTHealth Medical School.

The bacterium can invade almost any tissue in humans or animals and trigger an infection that lasts from months to years. Its symptoms include a reddish rash that often resembles a bull's eye and flu-like symptoms. The disease can lead to nervous system problems, joint inflammation and heart abnormalities. Most instances of Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics.

"Our long-term goals are to screen, identify and characterize the virulence determinants of the Lyme disease bacterium and thereby dissect the mechanism of pathogenesis in mammals and ticks," said Tao Lin, D,V.M., the study's lead author and assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the UTHealth Medical School. "With this information, we will have a clearer picture about the virulence determinants and virulence factors for this fascinating microorganism and the mechanism of pathogenesis behind this unique, invasive, persistent pathogen."

Norris, the Robert Greer Professor of Biomedical Sciences at UTHealth, and Lin are running tests on the 1,739 genes in the bacterium to see which genes impact the microorganism's ability to spread disease.

To do this, they mutated the bacterial genes and gauged the impact in a mouse infection model. Overall, 4,479 mutated bacteria were isolated and characterized. Whereas it took researchers about three decades to knock out less than 40 bacterial genes, Norris and Lin knocked out 790 genes in a comparatively short period of time; some genes were "hit" multiple times. A newly developed screening technique, which involves signature-tagged mutagenesis and Luminex?-based high-throughput screening technologies, can also be used to identify infection-related genes in other bacteria.

"This kind of study enables us to better understand the disease pathogenesis at the basic level," said Charles Ericsson, M.D., head of clinical infectious diseases at the UTHealth Medical School. "In time, such understanding of virulence properties might enable us to develop vaccine candidates, better diagnostic tools and perhaps even targeted drug intervention."

Norris and Lin are on the faculty of The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston.

Previously, Norris helped develop a method based on one of the bacterium's proteins, called VlsE, for diagnosing Lyme disease. The test, which is now used worldwide, involves detection of VlsE-specific antibodies, which are often found in people and animals infected with Lyme disease.

Also participating in the study from UTHealth were Lihui Gao, D.V.M., Chuhua Zhang, Evelyn Odeh and Loic Coutte, Ph.D. Mary B. Jacobs and Mario Philipp, Ph.D., of the Tulane University Health Sciences Center collaborated on the study as did George Chaconas, Ph.D., of The University of Calgary in Canada. Mutated strains produced through this study are being made available to the scientific community through BEI Resources.

The study is titled "Analysis of an ordered comprehensive STM mutant library in infectious Borrelia burgdorferi: insights into the genes required for mouse infectivity." The project described was supported by Award Number R01AI059048 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Verizon, AT&T put Samsung's Galaxy Note II on pre-sale for $300 with a two-year contract

Verizon, AT&T put Samsung's Galaxy Note II on presale for $299 with a twoyear contract

Samsung's Galaxy Note II played coy at first by only hanging out with the European crowd, but now that it's here, it's the life of the US carrier party. The two biggest, AT&T and Verizon, have now glommed the phablet and each are offering it for pre-sale in all its quad-core Exynos, 5.5-inch glory for $300 under a two-year contract. We just handled Verizon's variant, but weren't sure of a sale date, and AT&T's version, which we saw earlier was already expected for pre-order today. When Sprint's copy of the handset arrives later today, that'll round out the Note II's major US carrier dance card -- so you'll be able to grab it at whichever plucks on your heart (or purse) strings.

Video Shows Drunk, Stoned US Defense Contractors

Cellphone video recorded earlier this year at an operations center of a U.S. defense contractor in Kabul, Afghanistan appears to show key personnel staggeringly drunk or high on narcotics, in what former employees say was a pattern of outrageous behavior that put American lives at risk and went undetected by U.S. military officials who are supposed to oversee such contractors.

The video, provided to ABC News by two former employees, is scheduled to be broadcast in a report this evening on "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" and "Nightline."

WATCH a short clip from the video

Asked if a response to an attack by terrorists would have been possible during the events seen on the video, one of the former employees, Kenny Smith, told ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross, "No, sir."

Questions posed by ABC News to the Pentagon have sparked a criminal investigation by the U.S. Army, a spokesman says.

The contractor, Virginia-based Jorge Scientific, has won almost $1 billion in U.S. government contracts.

The company says it has taken "decisive action to correct the unacceptable behavior of a limited number of employees" and that several of them seen on the video are no longer employed by Jorge Scientific.

The use of alcohol or illegal drugs by U.S. contractors in Afghanistan is prohibited by the military under what is known as General Order Number One.

Yet the former employees told ABC News they saw no evidence of oversight of the company by American military officials and that at least one U.S. Army major, a female, was a regular visitor to drunken parties at the facility, often using a room for sexual encounters.

The two former employees, John Melson and Kenny Smith, say the video documents allegations they have made in a lawsuit against Jorge Scientific.

"They endangered Jorge employees, the U.S. mission, and U.S. military personnel," claims the lawsuit.

READ the allegations in Melson and Smith's lawsuit

Melson and Smith worked as armed security officers for three and five months, respectively, in Kabul as part of a $47 million contract Jorge Scientific had under the U.S. Legacy Program to train the Afghan National Police in counter-insurgency efforts.

Both men say they quit the company in disgust and out of concern that their own safety was being compromised by the behavior they describe.

"It was going against everything that we were trying to do over there," said Melson.

The video shows the security manager for the company staggering about the operations center late one evening after taking large gulps of vodka and then engaging another employee in a half-naked wrestling match.

"It was like a frat house for adults," said Melson. "Some of them to the point where they were passing out, there's firearms laying around, some of them still carrying the firearms on them."

Another portion of the video shows the company's medical officer with glassy eyes and unable to respond to a request for help after shooting up with a prescription anesthetic, Ketamine.

Told of the existence of the video, the medical officer, Kevin Carlson, admitted to ABC News that he frequently injected himself with narcotics.

"It was getting to be such a nightmare, just living in that place, I needed to get away," said Carlson, who was among the employees dismissed by the company earlier this year.

Now living in Germany, Carlson said there was "massive drug and alcohol abuse" at that Jorge Scientific facility, involving executives, armed security personnel and himself.

Blood hormone levels predicted long-term breast cancer risk for ...

ANAHEIM, Calif. ? Blood hormone tests predicted a woman's risk for developing postmenopausal breast cancer for up to 20 years, according to data from the Nurses' Health Study presented at the 11th Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held here Oct. 16-19, 2012.

"We found that a single hormone level was associated with breast cancer risk for at least 16 to 20 years among postmenopausal women not using postmenopausal hormones," said Xuehong Zhang, M.D., an epidemiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. "We, and others, are now evaluating if the addition of hormone levels to current risk prediction models can substantially improve our ability to identify high-risk women who would benefit from enhanced screening or chemoprevention. If so, the current data suggest that hormone levels would not need to be measured in the clinic more than once every 10, or possibly 20, years."

Zhang and colleagues analyzed 796 patients with postmenopausal breast cancer who had not received hormone therapy. They conducted blood hormone tests at two time points: between 1989 and 1990, and between 2000 and 2002. They then matched each patient with two controls who were not diagnosed with breast cancer.

Women with hormone levels in the highest 25 percent for estradiol, testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) had a 50 percent to 107 percent greater chance for developing breast cancer compared with women in the lowest 25 percent. Relative risks for developing breast cancer were similar at one to 10 years versus 11 to 20 years (also 16 to 20 years) after blood collection.

Zhang and colleagues also investigated whether these higher hormone levels were more closely linked to hormone receptor- (HR) positive breast cancers and if they predicted risk regardless of tumor aggressiveness.

In the first case, they found that elevated levels of estradiol increased a woman's risk for HR-positive breast cancer. In general, increased hormone levels, except for DHEAS, tracked closely with increased risk for HR-positive breast cancer. Data on HR-negative cancers were inconclusive.

Elevated hormone levels were also associated with aggressive breast cancer, which the study defined as recurrent or fatal cancer. "The relationship was comparable or possibly stronger for recurrent and fatal breast cancer than it was for overall breast cancer risk, although these results were based on relatively small numbers of participants," said Zhang.

Researchers also confirmed the protective effect of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which seems to negate the cancer-causing effects of certain hormones. Women in the highest 25 percent of SHBG levels had a 30 percent lower risk for breast cancer compared with women in the lowest 25 percent for SHBG levels.

Zhang noted that the study had low case numbers for several cancer subgroups, including HER2-positive, triple-negative and basal-like breast cancers. More research is necessary to determine the relationship between elevated hormone levels and these important breast cancer subtypes.

Researchers reveal how 'cleaving' protein drives tumor growth in prostate, other cancers

Researchers reveal how 'cleaving' protein drives tumor growth in prostate, other cancers

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Researchers led by Tanya Stoyanova and Dr. Owen Witte of UCLA's Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research have determined how a protein known as Trop2 drives the growth of tumor cells in prostate and other epithelial cancers.

This discovery is important because it may prove essential for creating new therapies that stop the growth of cancer, the researchers said. The study is featured on the cover of the Oct. 15 issue of the journal Genes and Development.

The Trop2 protein is expressed on the surface of many types of epithelial cancer cells ? cells that form tumors that grow in the skin and the inner and outer linings of organs ? but little was known about the protein's role in the growth and proliferation of cancer cells. The UCLA researchers discovered that Trop2 controls those processes through a mechanism that leads to the protein being cleaved into two parts, one inside the cell and one outside. This Trop2 division promotes self-renewal of the cancer cells, resulting in tumor growth.

"Determining the mechanism of this protein is important for planning treatments that stop the growth of prostate cancer, but it is also overexpressed in so many other types of cancer that it might be a treatment target for many more patients beyond that population," said senior author Witte, director of the Broad Center and a professor in the department of microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics at UCLA.

The finding may have a critical clinical impact, the researchers said, since preventing the cleavage of Trop2 by mutating those sites on the protein where it splits eliminates the protein's ability to promote tumor cell growth. Using this knowledge, they said, new therapy strategies can be developed that block Trop2 molecular signaling, thus stopping its ability to enhance tumor growth in a variety of epithelial malignancies, including prostate, colon, oral cavity, pancreatic and ovarian cancers, among others.

"The reason I became interested in Trop2 was that it is highly expressed in many epithelial cancers but no one knew precisely how the protein worked to promote the disease," said Stoyanova, the study's first author and a postdoctoral scholar in the department of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics at UCLA.

(AP) ? A new London exhibition has brought together more than 100 Hollywood costumes, from Darth Vader's suit to the world's most famous ruby slippers.

The show, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, aims to tell the story of the process of costume design and how it helps create believable characters, curators said Tuesday.

"It's not really about the clothes ? it's really about creating an authentic individual, every time," said guest curator Deborah Landis, who has designed costumes for movies including "The Blues Brothers."

Many of cinema's most legendary outfits are here: Charlie Chaplin's baggy suit, hat and cane ensemble; Holly Golightly's black Givenchy gown in "Breakfast at Tiffany's;" Scarlett O'Hara's green velvet dress from "Gone with the Wind;" and Indiana Jones' leather jacket and fedora from "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Among the show's highlights are Dorothy's ruby slippers and blue and white gingham pinafore from "The Wizard of Oz," which were united for the first time since the 1939 movie was filmed.

The museum's assistant curator, Keith Lodwick, said his team spent five years on a worldwide treasure hunt, borrowing the costumes from museums, collectors and film studios.

There were plenty of glamorous gowns from Hollywood's best-known screen sirens: Marilyn Monroe's white halter-neck dress from "The Seven Year Itch;" Elizabeth Taylor's floor-length cream gown in "Cleopatra;" and Barbra Streisand's purple evening dress in "Funny Girl."

But Lodwick said the exhibition also included some unusual choices to surprise viewers expecting just outlandish sci-fi outfits and elaborate period costumes.

"All movie costumes, no matter the genre, are always meticulously researched," Lodwick said.

Matt Damon's casual outfit in the "Bourne Identity" action movies, for example, may "look just like a jacket and shirt, but it was meant to make him disappear into a crowd," he said.

The exhibition opens Saturday and runs until Jan. 27.

Wrongful Death Claim In US Border Patrol Shooting In Southern California

The family of a 32-year-old mother of five shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent as he rode on her car?s hood in suburban San Diego has filed a wrongful death claim against the agency, saying the agent had a long history of misconduct in a previous law enforcement job and should not have been on the street.

Attorney Eugene Iredale filed the claim Friday with the Border Patrol on behalf of Valeria ?Munique? Tachiquin Alvarado and provided a copy to The Associated Press.

The documents, a required precursor for a lawsuit, say the agent, 34-year-old Justin Tackett, was suspended four times for misconduct including crashing a patrol car and violating suspects? rights in the nearly four years that he worked as an Imperial County sheriff?s deputy. Tackett had been given a notice that he?d be fired just before he quit the job in 2003, the documents say.

In one 2002 probation case, according to the claim, Tackett ?willfully disobeyed a direct order? and ?provided false and misleading information during the investigation.?

In a different incident in 2001, Tackett was called to assist police in Brawley with an incident and told to wait for them at the scene but instead rousted the suspect himself, engaged him in an altercation and cuffed him without a warrant.

The Border Patrol, which has not released Tackett?s name or answered questions about him, declined comment, and a phone listing for Tackett or an attorney representing him could not be found.

But in a wrongful termination suit he filed in 2004, Tackett claimed he was the victim of retaliation for pursuing cases against supervisors? friends and of racial discrimination because he was white.

On Sept. 28, authorities say Alvarado left an apartment in Chula Vista where border agents were serving a warrant against someone else, and say she deliberately ran into Tackett, who shot her out of fear for his life after being forced to ride on the hood for several hundred yards (meters) as he asked her to stop.

Shawn Moran, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, the agents? union, said he was confident Tackett did the right thing in the incident.

?If the agent says his life was threatened and he needed to use deadly force, we?re going to back him and accept his statement at face value,? Moran told the newspaper U-T San Diego, which first reported the Alvarado family claim.

The FBI and Chula Vista police are investigating the incident.

Sept. 11 trial rules under scrutiny at Guantanamo

(AP) ? A U.S. military judge is considering broad security rules for the war crimes tribunal of five Guantanamo prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 attacks, including measures to prevent the accused from publicly revealing what happened to them in the CIA's secret network of overseas prisons.

Prosecutors have asked the judge at a pretrial hearing starting Monday to approve what is known as a protective order that is intended to prevent the release of classified information during the eventual trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has portrayed himself as the mastermind of the terror attacks, and four co-defendants.

Lawyers for the defendants say the rules, as proposed, will hobble their defense. The American Civil Liberties Union, which has filed a challenge to the protective order, says the restrictions will prevent the public from learning what happened to Mohammed and his co-defendants during several years of CIA confinement and interrogation.

The protective order requires the court to use a 40-second delay during court proceedings so that spectators, who watch behind sound-proof glass, can be prevented from hearing ? from officials, lawyers or the defendants themselves ? the still-classified details of the CIA's rendition and detention program.

"What we are challenging is the censorship of the defendant's testimony based on their personal knowledge of the government's torture and detention of them," said Hina Shamsi, an ACLU attorney who will be arguing against the protective order during the pretrial hearing at the U.S. base in Cuba.

The protective order, which is also being challenged by a coalition of media organizations that includes The Associated Press, is overly broad because it would "classify the defendants own knowledge, thoughts and experience," Shamsi said in an interview.

"It's a truly extraordinary and chilling proposal that the government is asking the court to accept," she said.

Protective orders are standard method in civilian and military trials to set rules for handling evidence for the prosecution and defense. Military prosecutors argue in court papers that the Sept. 11 trial requires additional security because the accused have personal knowledge of classified information such as interrogation techniques and knowledge about which other countries provided assistance in their capture.

"Each of the accused is in the unique position of having had access to classified intelligence sources and methods," the prosecution says in court papers. "The government, like the defense, must protect that classified information from disclosure."

The U.S. government has acknowledged that before the defendants were taken to Guantanamo in September 2006 they were subjected to "enhanced interrogation techniques" such as the simulated drowning method known as water-boarding. Defense attorneys say the treatment will be used to form the basis of their defense but the proposed protective order limits their ability to make that case in court and in public advocacy on behalf of their clients.

"It's a way in which the government can hide what it did to these men during the period of detention by the CIA," said Army Capt. Jason Wright, a Pentagon-appointed attorney for Mohammed. "I think we need to bring the truth to the light of day on these issues."

The judge's approval of the protective order, which may not happen this week, must occur before the Sept. 11 case can move forward. Defense lawyers cannot begin to review classified evidence against their clients until it is in place.

The protective order is the most contentious of about two dozen preliminary motions scheduled to be heard during a pretrial hearing expected to run through Friday. Other matters include whether the defendants can be required to attend court sessions, what clothing they are allowed to wear and defense requests for additional resources for what is considered one of the most significant terrorism prosecutions in U.S. history.

Mohammed and his four co-defendants are being prosecuted in a special military tribunal for war-time offenses known as a military commission. They were arraigned May 5 on charges that include terrorism, conspiracy and 2,976 counts of murder in violation of the law of war, one count for each known victim of the Sept. 11 attacks at the time the charges were filed. They could get the death penalty if convicted.

Mohammed, a Pakistani citizen who grew up in Kuwait and attended college in North Carolina, has told military officials that he planned the Sept. 11 attacks "from A to Z" and was involved in about 30 other terrorist plots. He has said, among other things, that he personally beheaded Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. The other defendants are Ramzi Binalshibh; Walid bin Attash; Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi; and Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali.

Their arraignment was an unruly, 13-hour proceeding in which the defendants stalled proceedings by refusing the use the court translation system and ignoring the judge. Subsequent hearings to handle pretrial motions were postponed because of scheduling conflicts, the Muslim holy period of Ramadan and Tropical Storm Isaac. Several more pretrial hearings must be held to litigate hundreds of motions before the start of the trial, which is likely at least a year away.

Distressed Homeowners Blog: Short sale relief at risk?

Short sales are growing in popularity, but that may soon change. The ?Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act and Debt Cancellation? is expiring at the end of the year, which could make more homeowners think twice about doing a short sale, CNBC reporter Diana Olick reports.

Debt forgiveness with short sales is taxable. If a bank forgives, for example, $20,000 in mortgage debt by approving a short sale, that $20,000 is generally considered taxable income to the short-sell homeowner. In 2007, however, Congress passed a law that temporarily relieved that tax burden on mortgage debt that is forgiven as part of a short sale.

Many real estate professionals ?believe if the legislation is not extended, households who are already struggling to pay their mortgages will be further burdened with tens of thousands of dollars in additional taxes that they probably can?t afford to pay because the IRS would count the cancelled debt as income,? says Jamie Gregory, a lobbyist for the National Association of Realtors? (NAR).

However, the tax benefit could get extended. The Senate Finance Committee passed a package that included several tax extensions recently, including a one-year mortgage relief extension. The House of Representative is still weighing how to handle the tax extensions, however.

Since the forgiveness currently applies to home sales in 2012 ? and Americans pay their 2012 taxes during the first few months of 2013 ? the income tax hit would not be felt until U.S. residents fill out their taxes in 2014. Congress could, in theory, pass a law in 2013 that continues the tax forgiveness. If the president signs the law, the problem ? depending on the details within a signed bill ? could go away.

NAR has closely tracked the issue. The national association plans to issue a Call for Action and ask Realtors to call their personal lawmakers if it becomes necessary. NAR calls it ?an urgent priority during the expected ?lame duck? session of Congress following the election in November.?

In the first quarter of 2012, more than a quarter of a million short sales were completed, according to RealtyTrac. Some analysts speculate that short sales will increase this fall as borrowers and banks rush to complete them before the expiration of the mortgage debt relief act.

With Turkey-Syria escalation, worries grow about a tip into war

Tension has steadily risen for months along Turkey's long shared border with Syria, spiking with the Syrian shoot-down of a Turkish jet fighter this summer and again last week as Turkey responded to Syrian artillery shells landing on its side of the border. Turkey says it doesn't want war, but it is far from clear where the tit-for-tat with Syria will stop.

The incident is the latest development in what has become a proxy war between President Bashar al-Assad's regime and allies Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, and its opponents, who are backed by Turkey, the US, the European Union, and rich Persian Gulf states.

Turkey hosts the Syrian opposition and has facilitated supplies to the rebel Free Syrian Army, which is fighting to topple Mr. Assad in a 20-month uprising that has turned into a global tug-of-war.

But it was Turkey's decision to force a Syrian passenger plane to land in Turkey overnight on Oct. 10 that has analysts using the word "escalation." Turkey confiscated what it claims was illegal military equipment en route from Moscow, though it has yet to make its findings public. Syria accused Turkey of "air piracy," while Russia demanded an explanation.

RELATED ? What is Russia thinking on Syria? A brief guide

Chief of Staff Gen. Necdet Ozel visited the border the day of the plane grounding and said Turkey would respond "with greater force" if Syrian shells continued to land in Turkey. Reuters reported today that two jet fighters had been scrambled after a Syrian helicopter fired on a Syrian border town. The Turkish parliament last week authorized troop deployments beyond Turkey's borders.

The risks are high for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who, not long after the anti-Assad rebellion began, reversed his government's friendly policy toward "brother" Assad to cheerlead for the opposition ? figuring that Assad would in short order go the way of removed Arab Spring dictators in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

The Turkish government "assumed this would be a very fast process [and] wanted to have some stake," so began a "proactive involvement in this process. Actually, this calculation turned out to be wrong," says Ersin Kalaycioglu, a political science professor at Sabanci University in Istanbul.

"Now we are into this mess up to our waists, probably, if not our neck. [Turkish leaders] don't want to get out of it very easily and they are afraid of losing face," says Prof. Kalaycioglu.

Poor relations, combined with "a few accidents, and a few [incorrect] assumptions and decisions, could go all the way to a greater escalation and perhaps even war, and therefore it's a very unnerving process," says Kalaycioglu. The Erdogan government has been making "one error after another, as far a Syria is concerned."

Mr. Erdogan sought yesterday to explain the diversion of the Syrian passenger plane by stating that "munitions" destined for Syria's Ministry of Defense were among the items onboard the flight, sent by Russia's state arms exporter, and that "carrying such materials through our airspace is against international rules."

Yet Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said only that items that "may" have military application were onboard. Turkish media reported communications equipment ? information that appeared to be backed up by a Syrian Airlines staff interviewed in Damascus, who described Turkish officials comparing the electronic items to the documents that described them as such.

Russia's Kommersant newspaper today said the cargo included radar spare parts for Syria's Russian-made missile-defense systems.

"Turkey has to work really hard to avoid giving the impression that it's escalating the situation," says Hugh Pope, the Turkey analyst for the International Crisis Group in Istanbul.

"Definitely Turkey's main effort should be to stay within international consensus, do its utmost to try to bring Russia, China, and Iran and all the other players that are part of the problem there onto the same page," says Mr. Pope. "There are signs that Russia is uneasy with the situation, and that Iran is uneasy, and Turkey should build on those.... It's really important for Turkey that it not be seen as part of the Syrian problem."

PUBLIC OPINION OPPOSED TO WAR

Opinion polls in Turkey make it clear that Turks ? whose nation forms the eastern anchor of the US-commanded NATO alliance ? do not want to get involved in a war in Syria that could spread across the region. With some 100,000 Syrian refugees now in Turkey, and more in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, some say that regional consequences of the slow-burn rebellion are already absorbing the region.

"One of the huge successes of Turkish policy over the last decade is to decouple itself from the difficulties of the Middle East, and prove itself to be an almost-European player," says Pope. "Of course, if Turkey's attacked, and people get killed, then there is a desire for prevention, revenge ... and the responsibility of the leadership in these cases is to guide public opinion and keep things proportionate and not whip up popular sentiment, because there is no good, quick outcome of the events in Syria."

Indeed, the killing of five Turkish civilians last week in the town of Akcakale stirred nationalist sentiments in Turkey, prompted Ankara to call for an emergency meeting of NATO to discuss defensive plans ? but also raised new questions about where Turkey's Syria policy was taking it."The calculations done [about a quick Assad exit] in nice offices did not work out on paper," political analyst and Milliyet columnist Semih Idiz told Al Jazeera English.

"But these expectations went awry ... the sectarian dimension kicked in, the fact that Syria proved to have a much more complicated sociology than these other countries kicked in, what was supposed to be a straightforward thing for Turkey ... has in fact turned into some kind of a debacle," says Mr. Idiz.

"[Erdogan] has to internationalize the issue as much as possible, personalize it less, and not concentrate so much on Mr. Assad ... but on the need for stability and peace in the region," adds Idiz. "There is a civil war going on in Syria at this stage, and if you take sides in a civil war, then there is very little contribution that you can make for peace."

Space shuttle Endeavour starts road trip to new LA home

LOS ANGELES | Fri Oct 12, 2012 12:06pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The retired space shuttle Endeavour set off on Friday for a trip unlike any of its previous journeys, one in which it will crawl through the streets of Los Angeles instead of hurtling through space.

Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn as it began a two-day journey at 2 miles per hour (3.2 km per hour) atop a massive wheeled transporter to its retirement home at the California Science Center on the edge of downtown.

The shuttle flew from 1992 to 2011 and will go on public display after arriving at its destination. It was largely built in southern California and was a workhorse of the U.S. space program, flying on 25 missions.

It left the airport shortly after 2 a.m. (0900 GMT) and reached its first scheduled stop just before 6 a.m. (1300 GMT) - a strip mall parking lot where a few hundred spectators gawked at it.

The stop was to give crews time to shut down power lines along the shuttle's path and raise them to make room for the vehicle, said Los Angeles police spokesman Sergeant Rudy Lopez.

"I grew up in central Florida and saw many shuttle launches, but this is the first time I've ever been up close to one," said bystander Stephen Caldwell, 38.

"This really is a big part of American history and to be able to see it here is really special," he said.

Caldwell, who works in airport design and construction and was visiting Los Angeles on business, said he did not know Endeavour was moving through the streets until he looked out his hotel window.

Ten-year-old Sasha Benson, a local resident, also was taking it all in. "It's cool that it's been up in space," she said.

Workers have felled 400 curbside trees along Endeavour's 12-mile (19-km) route to clear its way. The science center will plant more than 1,000 trees to make up for their removal.

Street lights, traffic signals, power poles and parking meters along the path are being temporarily removed.

Crews have already laid down more than 2,000 steel plates at sensitive points to shield the road and underground utilities from the crushing weight of the shuttle and its transporter.

The project to move Endeavour will cost over $10 million, said Shell Amega, a spokeswoman for the science center.

The center beat out a number of other institutions when the U.S. space agency NASA chose it as the permanent home for the nearly 80-ton winged spaceship.

It was taken out of service because of the end of the NASA shuttle program that began with a launch in 1981.

Endeavour hop-scotched across the country from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the back of a modified Boeing 747. It was parked at the airport after arriving on September 21 following a ceremonial piggyback flight around California during which spectators on the ground cheered and wept.

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry said on Thursday that when Endeavour flew over the city last month, she and her colleagues ran up to the roof of City Hall where they watched it with tears in their eyes.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Perry said she remained apprehensive about the road journey, when she said Endeavour will pass through intersections with as little as six inches of clearance. She also anticipates large crowds along the way.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the space shuttle come down your neighborhood street," Perry said. "How often does that happen?"

Los Angeles police were closing streets along the planned route for what organizers are calling "Mission 26," in reference to the shuttle's 25 previous missions into space.

Once it arrives at the center, it will be displayed in a temporary, hangar-style metal structure to protect it from the elements. In 2017 a special pavilion will open in which Endeavour will stand vertically, said Ken Phillips, aerospace curator at the center.

The other remaining spaceships from the shuttle program have also found homes.

The Smithsonian in Washington has Discovery at its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center museum in Virginia. New York City has the prototype shuttle Enterprise at its Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. And the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral in Florida has Atlantis, which the center will move to an on-site visitor complex next month.

Police: Body identified as missing Colorado girl

Police in Westminster, Colo., today officially confirmed that a body found Wednesday belongs to missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

"We recognize there is a predator at large in our community," said Westminster, Colo., Police Chief Lee Birk.

The girl had been missing since Oct. 5.

"The commitment of the task force of investigators in this case will not waver," said James Yacone, special agent in charge of the FBI's Denver office. "Our commitment and resolve to seek justice on behalf of Jessica will only grow stronger."

Yacone said that in the past week investigators have searched 500 homes, 1,000 vehicles and received 1,500 tips.

ABC News reported Wednesday that law enforcement sources believed the body found in Arvada, Colo., was Jessica's, based on several factors. Positive identification, however, was delayed until now because the body was badly dismembered and "not intact", police said Thursday.

Jessica's body was found about seven miles from her home in Westminster, Colo. Her backpack and water bottle were recovered from a neighborhood subdivision in Superior, Colo., on Sunday.

Ridgeway's mother, Sarah, told police she last saw her daughter in Westminster Friday morning when Jessica left for school. The fifth-grader never showed up at a nearby park where she was supposed to meet friends for the one-mile walk to her elementary school. It was a route she took every day, but this time she never arrived.

The school called to report Jessica absent, but Sarah Ridgeway told police she was asleep during the day because she works overnights and did not get the call until eight hours later, when she called police.

On Thursday, the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit released a profile of who they think committed the crime.

The suspect is most likely a man, the FBI said. He might have been a "no show" and missed work immediately after the incident and offered a plausible excuse such as illness, death in the family or car trouble.

The individual might express an intense interest in the status of the investigation and pay close attention to the media. But some offenders might quickly turn off media accounts or try to redirect conversations concerning the victims or their families, according to the FBI.

"It could be your boss, it could be your friend and, ultimately, it could be your family member," FBI spokesman David Joly said.

EU holds fire on ZTE, Huawei telecom trade case

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission has delayed a trade case against two Chinese telecom equipment makers also under scrutiny in the United States, easing tensions between the European Union and its second-biggest trading partner.

A U.S. congressional report said on Monday that Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp - the world's second- and fifth-largest makers of wireless telecoms gear - were potential security risks and should be shut out of the U.S. market.

In Europe, where the two have had greater success in selling equipment and the concern is over prices rather than security, they can expect some respite -- probably until the middle of next year, EU diplomats and trade experts say.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht is gathering evidence in order to launch an anti-dumping or anti-subsidy case, but his efforts have been hindered by the fact that no European producer, such as Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, has complained. A formal complaint is normally a prerequisite for an investigation.

Analysts say European telecoms gear makers would be reluctant to cut themselves off from China, where demand for telecoms equipment is growing.

Nokia Siemens Networks and Alcatel-Lucent, globally No. 3 and No. 4 telecoms gear makers, have shown no willingness to do so, while market leader Ericsson has even said it does not want a case to be brought.

TRADE TENSION

China is the European Union's second-biggest trading partner after the United States, and the bloc is China's biggest trade partner. Trade between the two is forecast to hit a record 500 billion euros ($397 billion) this year.

Despite this, relations have been tense, with De Gucht complaining China subsidizes "nearly everything", distorting competition.

The EU suspects that the Chinese producers are hurting European telecoms equipment suppliers through artificially low prices, which are at least in part funded by the massive credit lines from the Chinese government.

A Reuters eyewitness has seen an offer from a Chinese gear maker to replace the whole network of a European carrier for nothing.

De Gucht said in May the Commission was considering launching a case on its own initiative, without the need for an industry complaint. It last took this approach in a case against India in 1997.

Trade experts say such cases are awkward because the Commission appears to be both complainant and judge and still needs co-operation from EU producers and EU member states, which ultimately vote on Commission proposals to impose duties.

"It's clear a number of member states are not in favor of this," an EU trade expert said.

The Commission also wishes to hold fire after starting an investigation last month into suspected dumping of solar panels by Chinese producers, the largest sector ever targeted.

The move, albeit following a complaint by European companies, drew a warning from China.

Trade experts and diplomats believe the Commission is awaiting Beijing's response before launching a telecoms case and hopes the solar panel case impresses upon China how serious it is about tackling dumping and subsidies.

Without action by June, the EU would impose duties on Chinese solar panels and probably launch its own action against Huawei and ZTE, trade experts say.

4-inch Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini comes to Germany Oct. 11

Galaxy S3 Mini

Samsung Mobile head JK Shin has announced the 4-inch Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini will be available in Germany on October 11. As the smaller cousin to the 4.8-inch Galaxy S3, don't call the Mini entry-level, as Shin says it will be "full form factor". There was no word about the internals, but we're hoping Samsung has found a way to cram everything we see in the full size version into the 4-inch form factor.

Shin says the demand for a 4-inch class device is high in Europe, and we can't help but think many in North America would also appreciate a slightly smaller version. We'll keep our eyes and ears open for more on that front as it unfolds.
